Dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, ada beberapa terminologi terkait dengan status bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa internasional, English as an International Language (EIL). Ada beberapa sebutan bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan statusnya di dunia, seperti bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pertama (native language), bahasa kedua (second language), dan bahasa asing (foreign language). Sebagai bahasa internasional, terdapat tiga istilah dalam penggunaan bahasa Inggris di dunia, yaitu inner-circle, outer-circle, dan expanding-circle. Inner-circle adalah istilah yang mengacu pada status bahasa Inggris yang digunakan sebagai bahasa pertama, outer-circle merujuk pada status bahasa Inggris yang digunakan sebagai bahasa kedua, dan expandingcircle adalah istilah penggunaan bahasa Inggris digunakan sebagai bahasa asing, seperti yang terjadi di Indonesia.
