Dalam istilah tasawuf, tarekat adalah suatu metode tertentu yang ditempuh seseorang secara kontinyu untuk membersihkan jiwanya dengan mengikuti jalur dan tahapan-tahapan dalam upayanya mendekatkan diri kepeda Allah SWT. Esensi pendidikan tarekat ialah proses pembersihan jiwa dari akhlak tercela dan menghiasi diri dengan akhlak yang mulia, atau dapat diartikan bahwa tarekat ialah mengamalkan ajaran islam secara totalitas, baik lahir maupun batin demi meraih rida Allah Swt atau wusul pada Allah. Dengan demikian, tarekat dalam perspektif ini dapat dilakukan dengan berbagai cara misalnya, menjadi pengajar ilmu agama, memberi petunjuk pada orang tentang cara-cara beribadah atau tentang akhlak mulia, dan lain sebagainya.
