Metal-Polymer Systems

The result of decades of research by a pioneer in the field, this is the first book to deal exclusively with achieving high-performance metal-polymer composites by chemical bonding. Covering both the academic and practical aspects, the author focuses on the chemistry of interfaces between metals and polymers with a particular emphasis on the chemical bonding between the different materials. He elucidates the various approaches to obtaining a stable interface, including, but not limited to, thermodynamically driven redox reactions, bond protection to prevent hydrolysis, the introduction of barrier layers, and stabilization by spacer molecules. Throughout, chemical bonding is promoted as a simple and economically viable alternative to adhesion based on reversible weak physical interaction. Consequently, the text equips readers with the practical tools necessary for designing high-strength metal-polymer composites with such desired properties as resilience, flexibility, rigidity or degradation resistance.

Skills Training In Reseach Degree Programmes

How might research degrees develop to improve both research student learning and employability? How should research student skills and development be evaluated? What are the skills that employers seek from research graduates? This book analyzes the development of research skills training and development and its wide-ranging impact on the UK research degree. The book examines the politics of skills training and its implications for academic culture as well as providing essential support and advice for practitioners and policy makers through examples of best practice. It also contains a thorough examination of the future of research degrees in the context of skills development and the supply o...

Hip Hop in The Sticks: A Deepening Con/Text

Via memory, material objects, music, people and place, Hip Hop In The Sticks picks up where Scratching the Surface left off. Through the eyes of an adolescent rural hip hop head, questions of identity, heritage and one’s own location in the world emerge through rich lived experience. Often idiosyncratic, humorously dry, and underpinned by comprehensive and informative endnotes, Hip Hop In The Sticks presents a deep non-fiction contextual narrative, intersecting family secrets, a different sense of community and kinship, embryonic hip hop and graffiti practice. Hip Hop In The Sticks makes visible a different account of life in late 1980s rural Britain and an alternative version of hip hop history.

"The SAGE Handbook of Popular Music is a comprehensive, smartly-conceived volume that can take its place as the new standard reference in popular music. The editors have shown great care in covering classic debates while moving the field into new, exciting areas of scholarship. International in its focus and pleasantly wide-ranging across historical periods, the Handbook is accessible to students but full of material of interest to those teaching and researching in the field." - Will Straw, McGill University "Celebrating the maturation of popular music studies and recognizing the immense changes that have recently taken place in the conditions of popular music production, The SAGE Handbook o...

Wagner in Russia, Poland and the Czech Lands

Richard Wagner has arguably the greatest and most long-term influence on wider European culture of all nineteenth-century composers. And yet, among the copious English-language literature examining Wagner's works, influence, and character, research into the composer’s impact and role in Russia and Eastern European countries, and perceptions of him from within those countries, is noticeably sparse. Wagner in Russia, Poland and the Czech Lands aims to redress imbalance and stimulate further research in this rich area. The eight essays are divided in three parts - one each on Russia, the Czech lands and Poland - and cover a wide historical span, from the composer’s first contacts with and appearances in these regions, through to his later reception in the Communist era. The contributing authors examine his influences in a wide range of areas such as music, literary and epistolary heritage, politics, and the cultural histories of Russia, the Czech lands, and Poland, in an attempt to establish Wagner’s place in a part of Europe not commonly addressed in studies of the composer.
