"I settled on the Graduate Liberal Studies (GLS) program at UNCW because it seemed to me that I could explore a variety of subjects and how they interplay, and not feel boxed in by the courses I could study. The GLS program definitely did not box me in and it was something of a luxury to spend time exploring a variety of themes and ideas from many different angles. Much of the experiential learning I was required to engage in was more demanding than I had anticipated. It is easy to regard self-reflection as lesser to research papers, but I see how these assignments were important to me personally, as they encouraged respect of process and exploration without a specific answer or conclusion. Looking now at the projects I completed, I see that it was impossible for me to abandon my compulsion to contribute something that would have wider implications."--Author's Statement.

Some days are more memorable than others. As pregnant Molly enjoys an early morning walk on an Oahu beach, she suddenly sees planes flying overhead. Her heart seems to stop as she notices the markings on the planes. Her muscles seem to desert her, leaving her motionless. Even her unborn baby makes no move. What has started as a beautiful day has now turned into the beginning of an unimagined nightmare. It is December 7, 1941. Fear overcomes Molly as she runs to her cottage, screaming for help. As the other residents in the small homes are awakened by the planes and her cries, everyone is transfixed as they look upward. Confusion soon turns to horror as the planes reach Kaneohe Naval Air Base, and the sound of explosions and gunfire fill the air. While some go to the base to help, Molly and Ed, along with others, evacuate their homes and head for the mountains with no idea of what to expect. Everything is about to change forever. Based on extensive research, Suspended narrates the impact on the civilian residents living in Hawaii after the bombing, including martial law restrictions, friendships, and, for some, adventure.

"The purpose of my final project is to show how the GLS program allows its students to engage in thought-provoking courses, readings, and assignments to explore the interconnectivity found within their various life pursuits. By revisiting some of the pivotal work that I have engaged in throughout my degree process, I reconnected with what was most impactful and reignited my impetus to evolve as an activist and writer. When editing and revising the portfolio pieces completed earlier in the GLS program, I had to apply skills I acquired later in the program, such as argumentative writing, graduate-level research, and process-driven formatting and design. For the pieces I wrote closer to the end of my degree, to restructure and update my submissions' arguments, I revisited my work with the fervor and motivation that initially inspired the thesis statements."--Author's Statement.
