This Is About My Life

This is the story of a young man with hopes and aspirations. It shows the short circuited thought processes that he has to deal with from day to day. Also obvious is the family strain of those who do not understand. These are the day to day stresses and dealings of asperger's. I have known this young man since 2000, and at the time I met him, he was attending high school. Since then, he has graduated, and attempted community college, but had no encouragement there, and so did not succeed. He is now 31 years old, and is enrolled in a business training environment, where he is flourishing. Success is around the corner.

Letters to Aly

How do you survive your best friend’s suicide? Alyessa jumps to her death two days after her 16th birthday. Her best friend Lee-Ann blames the tragedy on her failure to answer Aly’s last phone call. Haunted by what-ifs, stressed out by the looming ‘O’ Levels, and troubled by fraught relationships with her parents and on-off boyfriend Nate, Lee-Ann begins to contemplate suicide too. In Lee-Ann’s searingly honest diary entries, she exposes the wound of having a loved one gone too soon. This true account of a teenager’s journey reveals anger and despair at its most raw, and eventually hope as she begins the slow and painful recovery to live again.

Lincoln's Forgotten Ally

Joseph Holt, the stern, brilliant, and deeply committed Unionist from Kentucky, spent the first several months of the American Civil War successfully laboring to maintain Kentucky's loyalty to the Union and then went on to serve as President Lincoln's judge advocate general. In Lincoln's Forgotten Ally, Elizabeth Leonard offers the first full-scale biography of Holt, who has long been overlooked and misunderstood by historians and students of the war. In his capacity as the administration's chief arbiter and enforcer of military law, Holt strove tenaciously, often against strong resistance, to implement Lincoln's wartime policies, including emancipation. After Lincoln's assassination, Holt a...

America's Geisha Ally

During World War II, Japan was vilified by America as our hated enemy in the East. Though we distinguished "good Germans" from the Nazis, we condemned all Japanese indiscriminately as fanatics and savages. As the Cold War heated up, however, the U.S. government decided to make Japan its bulwark against communism in Asia. But how was the American public made to accept an alliance with Japan so soon after the "Japs" had been demonized as subhuman, bucktoothed apes with Coke-bottle glasses? In this revelatory work, Naoko Shibusawa charts the remarkable reversal from hated enemy to valuable ally that occurred in the two decades after the war. While General MacArthur's Occupation Forces pursued o...
