A semi-long visual/pattern/concrete poem by Drew B David, crafted expressly for millennial tastes. Is Dada dead, or has it been mysteriously resurrected, in a new, nefarious iteration? You decide. This is the second of a three-volume set.

What is a Context?

What is a Context?

Context is a core notion of linguistic theory. However, while there are numerous attempts at explaining single aspects of the notion of context, these attempts are rather diverse and do not easily converge to a unified theory of context. The present multi-faceted collection of papers reconsiders the notion of context and its challenges for linguistics from different theoretical and empirical angles. Part I offers insights into a wide range of current approaches to context, including theoretical pragmatics, neurolinguistics, clinical pragmatics, interactional linguistics, and psycholinguistics. Part II presents new empirical findings on the role of context from case studies on idioms, unarticulated constituents, argument linking, and numerically-quantified expressions. Bringing together different theoretical frameworks, the volume provides thought-provoking discussions of how the notion of context can be understood, modeled, and implemented in linguistics. It is essential for researchers interested in theoretical and applied linguistics, the semantics/pragmatics interface, and experimental pragmatics.

Thermoelastic Fracture Mechanics

Thermoelastic Fracture Mechanics

The book deals with the thermal and mechanical fracture of functionally graded materials on homogeneous substrate (FGM/H) structures. Emphasis is placed on multiple crack interactions. FGMs have a wide range of engineering applications; especially in thermal barrier coatings. Potentially desirable thermal and mechanical properties of functionally graded coatings (FGCs) are analyzed as well as available real material combinations, e.g. (ceramic/metal)/metal. Keywords: Thermal Fracture, Mechanical Fracture, Functionally Graded/Homogeneous Bimaterial, Thermo-Mechanical Loading, Mathematical Modelling, Thermal Stress Intensity, Fracture Criteria, Crack Closure, Systems of Cracks, Edge Cracks, Internal Cracks, Cracks Imitating a Curved Interface, Multiple Cracks Interaction, Thermal Barrier Coating, Thermal Fracture Resistance.

Extreme Values, Regular Variation, and Point Processes

This book examines the fundamental mathematical and stochastic process techniques needed to study the behavior of extreme values of phenomena based on independent and identically distributed random variables and vectors. It emphasizes the core primacy of three topics necessary for understanding extremes: the analytical theory of regularly varying functions; the probabilistic theory of point processes and random measures; and the link to asymptotic distribution approximations provided by the theory of weak convergence of probability measures in metric spaces.

Integral Equation Methods in Scattering Theory

  • Publisher: SIAM

This classic book provides a rigorous treatment of the Riesz?Fredholm theory of compact operators in dual systems, followed by a derivation of the jump relations and mapping properties of scalar and vector potentials in spaces of continuous and H?lder continuous functions. These results are then used to study scattering problems for the Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. Readers will benefit from a full discussion of the mapping properties of scalar and vector potentials in spaces of continuous and H?lder continuous functions, an in-depth treatment of the use of boundary integral equations to solve scattering problems for acoustic and electromagnetic waves, and an introduction to inverse scattering theory with an emphasis on the ill-posedness and nonlinearity of the inverse scattering problem.

Stochastic Control in Discrete and Continuous Time

This book contains an introduction to three topics in stochastic control: discrete time stochastic control, i. e. , stochastic dynamic programming (Chapter 1), piecewise - terministic control problems (Chapter 3), and control of Ito diffusions (Chapter 4). The chapters include treatments of optimal stopping problems. An Appendix - calls material from elementary probability theory and gives heuristic explanations of certain more advanced tools in probability theory. The book will hopefully be of interest to students in several ?elds: economics, engineering, operations research, ?nance, business, mathematics. In economics and business administration, graduate students should readily be able to...

Ouija: for the Record

The history of the used Ouija board Mary Cain bought in 1968 is not known, but Mary's family will never be the same. Their two-year odyssey is filled with unexplained and frightening twists and turns as they cede control to the spirits who inhabit the board. Will they survive being chosen for a destiny in Afghanistan?

Application and Theory of Petri Nets 2000

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 6th Congress of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence, AI*IA 99, held in Bologna, Italy, in September 1999. The 33 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book from a total of 64 congress submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on knowledge representation; automated reasoning; temporal and qualitative reasoning; machine learning, data mining, and theory revision; natural language processing and web interfaces; multi-agent systems; perception and robotics; and planning and scheduling.
