Global Processes of Flight and Migration

Global Processes of Flight and Migration

The case studies in this volume illustrate the global dimension of flight and migration movements with a special focus on South-South migration. Thirteen chapters shed light on transcontinental or regional migration processes, as well as on long-term processes of arrival and questions of belonging. Flight and migration are social phenomena. They are embedded in individual, familial and collective histories on the level of nation states, regions, cities or we-groups. They are also closely tied up with changing border regimes and migration policies. The explanatory power of case studies stems from analyzing these complex interrelations. Case studies allow us to look at both “common” and “rare” migration phenomena, and to make systematic comparisons. On the basis of in-depth fieldwork, the authors in this volume challenge dichotomous distinctions between flight and migration, look at changing perspectives during processes of migration, consider those who stay, and counter political and media discourses which assume that Europe, or the Global North in general, is the pivot of international migration.

“Aye, and I saw Sisyphus in violent torment, seeking to raise a monstrous stone with both his hands. Verily he would brace himself with hands and feet, and thrust the stone toward the crest of a hill, but as often as he was about to heave it over the top, the weight would turn it back, and then down again to the plain would come rolling the ruthless stone. But he would strain again and thrust it back, and the sweat flowed down from his limbs, and dust rose up from his head." HOMER We, Humans, are like Sisyphus. We've been trying to get the rock up the hill for the rest of our lives, but each time we roll down with the rock. The protagonist of the book tries to find a way to raise the rock and not roll back.

CHAPTER 1 MELTEM-BURAK ."."I first noticed that she was looking at me in the library. He had deep blue eyes and a child-like face, had brushed his hair back, his cheeks were so cute. The only thing I disliked about him was his moustache. His bell-bottomed trousers were seen under the table. If we ignored the moustache, he would even be said to be handsome. Of course, he could shave it. I think I know people well. His looks, gestures, outfits, inner worlds and the way they have been brought up tell on. The man sitting opposite me seemed to be sophisticated...""

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR US

“Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don't have to like it... it's just easier if you do.” ... -Byron Katie This book has been created with what the participants of the FMK Wisdom School shared from the bottom of their hearts. The participants of FMK Wisdom School shared their experiences of the times when they believed negative and stressful thoughts arguing with reality and of the times when they didn’t believe them. They wrote about their processes and transformations during their journey of love-in-action by giving examples. They created this book in their journey to themselves with the consciousness of considering everyone complete and whole as they are and by realizing the person, they have been waiting for was themselves. These people who have changed their lives with Byron Katie’s The Work method, 4 questions and Turnarounds have things to say to you. We invite you to hear us. “Real happiness is the unconditional happiness that exists in the present moment beyond ego consciousness.” -Feza Karakaş

Topics in Audiovisual Translation

The late twentieth-century transition from a paper-oriented to a media-oriented society has triggered the emergence of Audiovisual Translation as the most dynamic and fastest developing trend within Translation Studies. The growing interest in this area is a clear indication that this discipline is going to set the agenda for the theory, research, training and practice of translation in the twenty-first century. Even so, this remains a largely underdeveloped field and much needs to be done to put Screen Translation, Multimedia Translation or the wider implications of Audiovisual Translation on a par with other fields within Translation Studies. In this light, this collection of essays reflec...

Efforts and Models in Interpreting and Translation Research

This volume covers a wide range of topics in Interpreting and Translation Research. Some deal with scientometrics and the history of Interpreting Studies, arguments about conceptual analysis, meta-language and interpreters’ risk-taking strategies. Other papers are on research skills like career management, writing communicative abstracts and the practicalities of survey research. Several contributions address empirical issues such as expertise in Simultaneous Interpreting, the cognitive load imposed on interpreters by a non-native accent, the impact of intonation on interpreting quality, linguistic interference in Simultaneous Interpreting, similarities between translation and interpreting, and the relation between translation competence and revision competence. The collection is a tribute to Daniel Gile, in appreciation of his creativity and his commitment to interpreting and translation research. All the contributions in some way show his influence or are related to the models and research he has shaped.
