Genre Studies in Focus
This collection of essays aims to revise genre theory and studies. Authors in this volume present and discuss different literary genres in transition. They investigate genre hybridization, transformation, reconciliation and evolution. Therefore, the volume reconceptualizes the theory according to novel texts and contexts in, for example, trans-generic film series, feminine poetry, and Arab women writing. It introduces new generic labels in travel literature and new sub-genres in Maghrebean literature. Genre blurs the boundaries between genre hierarchy, labels, and borderlines. We read a gothic text that encompasses trauma, testimony, resistance and history. Moreover, scholars contributing to this collection astutely point out that genres are hybrid yet flexible by nature. Pidgins and Creoles beyond Africa-Europe Encounters
Most of what we know about pidgin and creole languages is the result of research into contact languages that developed as a consequence of European expansion into Africa and the Caribbean. The narrow focus on European lexifier and West African substrate languages has resulted in insufficient investigation of other contact varieties. Even more perniciously, lesser known and often under-described contact languages have not been taken into consideration when formulating supposedly general tendencies about the linguistic properties of contact languages. This volume aims to give a platform to research on the history, genesis, and typology of a number of non-European language-based contact languages. A more encompassing and diverse data-base will contribute to more accurate and comprehensive inventories of the typological features of contact languages.
Reading Henry James in the Twenty-First Century
To commemorate the recent centennial of Henry James’s death and to help readers understand the depth and scope of the author’s influence both today and during the previous century, thirty leading Jamesian scholars from twelve different countries and five continents were asked to explore ways in which the notions of ‘heritage’ and ‘transmission’ currently come into play when reading James. The resulting chapters of this volume are divided into three main sections, each focusing on different ways in which James’s legacy is being re-evaluated today—from his influence on key authors, playwrights and film-makers over the past century (Part One), to new discoveries regarding European authors and artists who influenced James (Part Two), to recent approaches more radically re-evaluating James for the twenty-first century, including contemporary poetics, political and sociological dimensions, cognitive science, and queer studies (Part Three). This collection will be of great interest to scholars and general readers of James, and is a useful guide to tracing the writer’s ever-elusive ‘figure in the carpet’ and understanding the power of his continued impact today.
