We all have a favourite teacher we remember fondly. That special teacher who brought their subject matter to life. The teacher who made sure we ‘got it’. The one who went out of their way to support their students and encourage their learning. The one we knew really cared. This is an anthology of warm and often humorous memories from forty-four students, staff and fellow faculty spanning two decades about a beloved professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. The intent of this collection of personal anecdotes and tributes is to share with others the possibilities of pursuing an academic career. It’s also about celebrating learning itself. As one former student wrote, “Dr. Lekic really opened my eyes to the fact that it can be good fun and very rewarding to win a child’s trust.” Beautifully illustrated, Academic Life as Seen by Others offers a rare glimpse into the world of academia from a decidedly non-academic and lighthearted viewpoint.

Responsible Business in a Changing World

This book explores the current state of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from an international perspective, the goal being to share ideas and visions for a sustainable future and to provide useful guidelines for academics, practitioners and policymakers in the context of the 2030 “Agenda for Sustainable Development” released by the United Nations. Research on CSR has evolved considerably over the last three decades. However, there are still many unanswered questions concerning the sustainability of business in an increasingly changing world, for example: If most companies consider CSR to be valuable to their organizations, why do only 15% of them systematically implement Social Responsibility initiatives? If CSR has been found to be profitable for companies, why are they so reluctant to develop an active, internal CSR policy? Why are there such significant differences in CSR adoption from country to country? Why does it take a huge crisis to make politicians react and regulate certain core CSR issues? This contributed volume answers these questions, presenting a wealth of case studies and new approaches in the process.

This book explores how Cuba’s famously successful and inclusive education system has formed young Cubans’ political, social, and moral identities in a country transfigured by new inequalities and moral compromises made in the name of survival. The author examines this educational experience from the perspective of those who grew up in the years of economic crisis following the fall of the Soviet Union, charting their ideals, their frustrations and their struggle to reconcile revolutionary rhetoric with twenty-first century reality.

That is, how risk and uncertainty change according to factors such as market states or market participants. In Chapter 2, which is entitled “Momentum Uncertainties”, the relationship between macroeconomic uncertainty and the abnormal returns of a momentum trading strategy in the stock market is studies. Three Essays in Financial Markets. The Bright Side of Financial Derivatives: Options Trading and Firm Innovation

Do financial derivatives enhance or impede innovation? We aim to answer this question by examining the relationship between equity options markets and standard measures of firm innovation. Our baseline results show that firms with more options trading activity generate more patents and patent citations per dollar of R&D invested. We then investigate how more active options markets affect firms' innovation strategy. Our results suggest that firms with greater trading activity pursue a more creative, diverse and risky innovation strategy. We discuss potential underlying mechanisms and show that options appear to mitigate managerial career concerns that would induce managers to take actions that boost short-term performance measures. Finally, using several econometric specifications that try to account for the potential endogeneity of options trading, we argue that the positive effect of options trading on firm innovation is causal.

This publication traces the history, accomplishments and milestones of the Creole Center located at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. THE Creole Book presents a beginning look at some of the Center's work and accomplishments. In its thirteen plus years of existence, the Center has served not only the Creoles in Louisiana, but the national Creole public, scholars, and anyone interested in the culture from around the world. It has paved the way for the long sought after recognition of the unique and deserving Louisiana Creole culture. The Center has also become the national Creole voice. To put it bluntly, Creoles can now be comfortable in declaring their culture and heritage. It is the author's belief that this would not be possible without the work that the Creole Center has done.
