Amongst Mathematicians

This book offers a unique perspective on ways in which mathematicians: perceive their students' learning; teach; reflect on their teaching practice. Elena Nardi achieves this by employing two fictional, yet entirely data-grounded, characters to create a conversation on these important issues. The construction of these characters is based on large bodies of data including intense focused group interviews with mathematicians and extensive analyses of students' written work, collected and analyzed over a substantial period.

In the last thirty years or so, the need to address the challenges of teaching and learning mathematics at university level has become increasingly appreciated by university mathematics teachers, and beyond, by educational institutions around the world. Indeed, mathematics is both a condition and an obstacle to success for students in many educational programmes vital to the 21st century knowledge society, for example in pure and applied mathematics, engineering, natural sciences, technology, economics, finance, management and so on. This breadth of impact of mathematics implies the urgency of developing research in university mathematics education, and of sharing results of this research wi...

The Learning and Teaching of Calculus

This book is for people who teach calculus – and especially for people who teach student teachers, who will in turn teach calculus. The calculus considered is elementary calculus of a single variable. The book interweaves ideas for teaching with calculus content and provides a reader-friendly overview of research on learning and teaching calculus along with questions on educational and mathematical discussion topics. Written by a group of international authors with extensive experience in teaching and research on learning/teaching calculus both at the school and university levels, the book offers a variety of approaches to the teaching of calculus so that you can decide the approach for yo...

Mathematics; Clarifying the distinction between mathematical research and mathematics education, this book offers hundreds of suggestions for making small and medium sized changes for lectures, tutorials, task design, or problem solving. Here is guidance and inspiration for effective mathematics teaching in a modern technological environment, directed to teachers who are unhappy with results or experience, or those now in teacher training or new to the profession. Commencing with a range of student behaviours and attitudes that have struck and amazed tutors and lecturers, Professor Mason offers a wealth of partial diagnoses, followed by specific advice and suggestions for remedial actions. - Offers suggestions for making small and medium-sized changes for lectures, tutorials, task design, or problem solving - Provides guidance and inspiration for effective mathematics teaching in a modern technological environment - Offers a wealth of partial diagnoses, followed by specific advice and suggestions for remedial actions

The Argument of Mathematics

The Argument of Mathematics

Written by experts in the field, this volume presents a comprehensive investigation into the relationship between argumentation theory and the philosophy of mathematical practice. Argumentation theory studies reasoning and argument, and especially those aspects not addressed, or not addressed well, by formal deduction. The philosophy of mathematical practice diverges from mainstream philosophy of mathematics in the emphasis it places on what the majority of working mathematicians actually do, rather than on mathematical foundations. The book begins by first challenging the assumption that there is no role for informal logic in mathematics. Next, it details the usefulness of argumentation theory in the understanding of mathematical practice, offering an impressively diverse set of examples, covering the history of mathematics, mathematics education and, perhaps surprisingly, formal proof verification. From there, the book demonstrates that mathematics also offers a valuable testbed for argumentation theory. Coverage concludes by defending attention to mathematical argumentation as the basis for new perspectives on the philosophy of mathematics.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Peptide Symposium and the Seventeenth American Peptide Symposium, held on 9-14 June, 2001, at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego, California. The biennial meeting was held under the auspices of the American Peptide Society. In addition to the main Symposium, we were honored to have the Merrifield Satellite Symposium, honoring Bruce Merrifield's accomplishments on his 80th birthday. Over 1250 participants from around the world attended the lectures, posters, and exhibits. Reflecting the international nature of the Symposium, there were participants from 37 countries in attendance. In addition to the 75 plenary lectures, there were over 575 poster presentations, and 70 commercial exhibits as well as booths from the American, Australian, Chinese, European, and Japanese Peptide Societies. These proceedings include plenary lectures and oral and poster presentations collected from a wide diversity of topics providing a truly comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the field of peptide science. This publication contains essential reference information for researchers active in peptide science.

Mathematics & Mathematics Education: Searching for Common Ground

This book is the fruit of a symposium in honor of Ted Eisenberg concerning the growing divide between the mathematics community and the mathematics education community, a divide that is clearly unhealthy for both. The work confronts this disturbing gap by considering the nature of the relationship between mathematics education and mathematics, and by examining areas of commonality as well as disagreement. It seeks to provide insight into the mutual benefit both stand to gain by building bridges based on the natural bonds between them.
