Roman Eyes

  • Categories: Art

In Roman Eyes, Jas Elsner seeks to understand the multiple ways that art in ancient Rome formulated the very conditions for its own viewing, and as a result was complicit in the construction of subjectivity in the Roman Empire. Elsner draws upon a wide variety of visual material, from sculpture and wall paintings to coins and terra-cotta statuettes. He examines the different contexts in which images were used, from the religious to the voyeuristic, from the domestic to the subversive. He reads images alongside and against the rich literary tradition of the Greco-Roman world, including travel writing, prose fiction, satire, poetry, mythology, and pilgrimage accounts. Vases, murals, statues, and masonry are explored in relation to such issues as power, death, society, acculturation, and r...

This collection contains the sketchbooks and journals of Larry Elsner, most of which were developed during Elsner’s teaching career at Utah State University between 1960 and 1990. They have been organized according to the estate numbers given to the set by Yoko Elsner after Larry’s death. Each book is stored in custom-sized boxes created specifically for the collection. The sketchbooks focus on the process of creating three-dimensional forms, and the contents reflect several overarching themes of Larry's work: the human form; animals, especially cats and horses; the landscape; and the forces and cycles of nature. Miscellaneous writings including poetry, quotes, and brief notes touching on the philosophy of art, aesthetics, and Elsner’s inspirations also appear throughout the sketches, leaving an intimate record of the most significant experiences, concerns and ideas of the artist's life.
