First published in 1961, The Moulding of Modern Man discusses views of the nature and boundaries of the Self, its relation to the physical world and to human beings, real and imagined, with reference to procedures training ‘space men’ to travel alone or in company, deprived of the assurances of sight, sound, even weight. It discusses methods of publicity and advertising, of overtly or covertly influencing motives, subception or subliminal persuasion and techniques of ‘thought reform’ often vaguely termed character training, and, more confusingly, ‘brain-washing’. Other topical subjects are conflicting loyalties, with special reference to the moral problems of scientists; the social significance in different countries of intellectuals and anti-intellectuals; the effects of mass culture upon the individual’s beliefs, tastes and opinions; the role of the Organization Man in Britain; the concepts of ‘face’ and ‘prestige’ in groups and nations; and conflicting ideas of progress maintained by contemporary thinkers in ‘two cultures’. Drawing from her in-depth ethnographic study of a London comprehensive school the author shows how gender formation for both girls and boys is mediated by disciplinary control, sexuality and the curriculum. Her findings for girls and boys - with their important emphases - are revealed. So are the responses and perspectives of the teachers. Prior to publication of this volume much feminist writing depicted the subordination of girls as a function of patriarchal control, both in terms of the teaching the girls receive and the behaviour of the boys around them. The author's narrative implicitly and explicitly challenges some of these views.
In this wide-ranging book, Stefan Collini deals with the relationship between Liberalism and sociology in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain. He discusses in particular the crucial contributions of L. T. Hobhouse, the leading Liberal political theorist of the period who is also generally regarded as the 'Founding Father' of British sociology. Based upon extensive original research, the book draws together themes from three fields which are normally pursued in historiographical isolation. It examines the moral and intellectual inspiration of the New Liberalism which came to dominate Edwardian politics; explores the nature of the systematic political philosophy in this period; and shows how the contemporary understanding of sociology was bound up with attempts to provide a theoretical and historical grounding for the belief in Progress, especially in opposition to Social Darwinist and other biological social theories. Throughout, the intellectual context necessary to a properly historical understanding of these ideas is reconstructed in detail and particular attention if paid to the structure of the moral and political discourse of the time.

Violence in its various proportions, genres and manifestations has had an enduring historical legacy the world over. However, works speaking to approaches aimed at mitigating violence characteristic of Africa are very limited.
