From mindfulness in schools to meditation apps, mental health is bursting out of the psychiatrist's chair and into our everyday conversations. As awareness of mental health increases, so does its predominance in popular culture, which makes for a particularly interesting investigation into the representation of these concerns on our most ubiquitous streaming service: Netflix. These eight essays explore how the service's original content jumps into those conversations, creating helpful--or harmful--messaging about the inner workings of our minds. From toxic masculinity to PTSD, adolescence to motherhood, mental health touches our lives in myriad ways. This interdisciplinary collection explores these intersections, examining how representations of mental health on our screens shape our understanding of it in our lives.

Multimodal work continues to have enormous significance for students' college and post-college careers. Despite this, there remains confusion in the literature about the best pedagogical practices for teaching such skills. By drawing on a wide array of theoretical and praxis-based research, this thesis proposes a theoretical framework to help teachers plan composition courses that can productively include multimodal work. Specifically, I argue that teachers need to situate themselves more firmly as compositionists, revisiting the scholarly works in that field with attentiveness to how the past works bear on contemporary concerns with multimodality. Additionally, I propose two critical frameworks for rethinking the deployment of multimodal work: metacriticism, composed of intermodal and ecological components, and deep media, drawn from writing on the entertainment industry. Finally, I spend the last sections moving away from theory and embracing praxis as I outline how one class I taught both did and did not enact these values.

This is the first book ever written for the defense on how to avoid runaway jury verdicts. I wrote this book because I care about fairness. I believe everyone has the right to a fair trial, not just plaintiff lawyers and their clients. Defendants are entitled to have a jury decide their case without being stirred with passion and bias by creative plaintiff lawyers. This is the defense "playbook" for justice. You will learn trial techniques to even the playing field for defendants seeking a fair trial. Every aspect of a civil jury trial will be covered, from voir dire to opening statements to witnesses and finally closing arguments. There is a formula for defeating plaintiff attorneys' decept...

The Films of Claire Denis

  • Categories: Art

The films of Claire Denis probe the idea of global citizenship and trace the borderlines of family, desire, nationality and power. Her films, including Chocolat, Beau travail and White Material explore connections between national experience and individual circumstance, visualizing the complications of such dualities. Following a foreword by Wim Wenders, international contributors explore the themes she addresses in her films, such as kinship and landscape, neo-colonialism and New French Extremity. Original interviews with an editor, actor and two composers familiar with Denis's working style and with Denis herself, also reveal fresh facets of this intrepid filmmaker.
