To share a life story is to open the doors of the heart and allow outsiders to explore its interior; it is to hand over the keys to a man's soul and walk its intrinsic hallways, its hidden paths. But Enrique's life is crystal clear, transparent. It is a life full of diversity and adventure. Being a son of a businessman and a journalist, an avid negotiator and a fighter, Enrique Garcia didn't know calmness as a child. His life was nomadic, like an everlasting pilgrimage where life changed its landscape constantly. Originally from Villa Juarez, San Luis Potosi, his childhood was adorned by the beautiful landscape of the Mexican High Plateau and splashed by the coastal waters of Ensenada, Baja ...

This thesis consists of extended program notes pertaining to the music presented in my graduate recital. I will elaborate on historical and analytical details of the following compositions: Les Soirees D'Auteuil Op.23 - Napoleon Coste (1805 - 1883); Prelude, Fugue, and Allegro BWV 998 - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750); Sonata Meridional - Manuel M. Ponce (1882 - 1948); Tres Piezas Españolas - Joaquin Rodrigo; Lob der Thränen - arr. J.K. Mertz, Franz Schubert; Hika - Leo Brower. It is worth mentioning that many of the pieces presented in this program were composed by non-guitarists and therefore, technical requirements and compositional decisions are explored in this program.

The Refracted Muse

Galileo never set foot on the Iberian Peninsula, yet, as Enrique García Santo-Tomás unfolds in The Refracted Muse, the news of his work with telescopes brought him to surprising prominence—not just among Spaniards working in the developing science of optometry but among creative writers as well. While Spain is often thought to have taken little notice of the Scientific Revolution, García Santo-Tomás tells a different story, one that reveals Golden Age Spanish literature to be in close dialogue with the New Science. Drawing on the work of writers such as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, and Quevedo, he helps us trace the influence of science and discovery on the rapidly developing and highly playful genre of the novel. Indeed, García Santo-Tomás makes a strong case that the rise of the novel cannot be fully understood without taking into account its relationship to the scientific discoveries of the period.
