"In a quarter of a century, the space of one generation, Erasmus, the best known of all European programmes, has transformed the experience of studying in Europe. It has shown what the European Union can achieve with a clear vision, enthusiasm and a willingness to cooperate. Erasmus has changed the lives of almost three million young people and opened the minds of the first genuinely European generation. This brochure illustrates how the programme has contributed to the original European vision of bringing together nations by putting people first in the building of a united Europe. Time spent abroad provides opportunities for gaining knowledge and skills and, for the young people taking part, a chance to become more confident and self-reliant. This experience gives them the edge in an increasingly competitive labour market and continues to have a positive impact throughout their careers. This can best be expressed in the words of the Erasmus Ambassadors, whose experiences are set out in these pages." -- EU Bookshop.

Although not translated into English until 1549, Erasmus's most famous work, the Praise of Folly, has an English provenance as the product of his friendship with Thomas More. The text of the original translation, by Thomas Chaloner, appears here for the first time in a fully annotated, modernised edition. It is presented alongside a selection from the English Paraphrases, a central text of the Edwardian Reformation; translations of two pacifist works, the Bellum Erasmiand The Complaint of Peace, the second of which is constructed as an oration, like Praise of Folly; and the essay on the adage Sileni Alcibiadis.
Although most of the letters from this period are familiar letters to friends or formal dedications to prospective patrons, there are occasional glimpses into the intense intellectual activity that filled these years.

The aim of the Collected Works of Erasmus is to make available an accurate, readable English text of Erasmus' correspondence and his other principal writings in an edition of 89 volumes. Erasmus was one of the architects of modern thought and his works reflect a vast range of interests including history, theology, the classics, social theory, education, political theory, literature, and the history of ideas. His letters remain the single most important source for the intellectual history of the Renaissance and Reformation. -- Publisher.
This is the first of five volumes to appear in the section of the CWE devoted to Erasmus' spiritualia, works of spirituality that include such aspects of religion as piety, theology, and the practice of ministry. The volume begins with an introductory essay that provides the first comprehensive review of the content, sources, and style of Erasmus' many works dealing with piety.
