Bringing together a range of contributors from multiple countries, this interdisciplinary volume offers a unique field view of the rule of law and human rights reform in the reconciliation and reconstruction process. The contributors all worked in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the ten years after the Dayton Peace Accords were signed; here they pause to analyze and critique the work they did. The contributors offer insights from within a variety of international organizations, including the Office of the High Representative, the Organization for Security and Cooperation and Europe, and the United Nations. Allowing those who were in the field to identify, discuss and reflect upon the programmes and policies, the collection reveals how the programmes were created, what laws they were pursuant to, and what alternatives were rejected and why. The authors not only assess both the positive and negative aspects and outcomes of their work, but also comment on lessons learned for future post-conflict reconstruction scenarios.

Scholars of international human rights law are largely unfamiliar with law and society scholarship, while the study of international human rights has remained at the margins of the law and society movement. International Law and Society: Empirical Approaches to Human Rights seeks to bridge this gap by presenting the work of a growing number of academics who are adopting a range of empirical approaches to international human rights. Drawn from the fields of anthropology, sociology, political science and law, the studies featured in this volume use a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze core issues of international law and human rights, such as compliance, the development of norms and the role of social movements.

Human Rights

To the consternation of the haves, some humans continue to insist that they are entitled to live as humans. While it is perhaps a question of philosophy what constitutes a human right, it is more clear what constitutes an abuse of human rights. The world has never been short on abusers and is surely not now. Only the names and faces have changed over time. The powerful tend to be the abusers and the weak the abused. Being aware of the abuses can at least focus light on them and perhaps serve as a proactive response. This bibliography presents hundreds of citations of human right violations under the categories: Basic Human Rights; North America; Latin America; Europe; Asia; Middle East and Africa. Access is provided via Title, Author and Subject Indexes.
