Violent Land

This book offers an explosive look at violence in America--why it is so prevalent, and what and who are responsible. David Courtwright takes the long view of his subject, developing the historical pattern of violence and disorder in this country. Where there is violent and disorderly behavior, he shows, there are plenty of men, largely young and single. What began in the mining camp and bunkhouse has simply continued in the urban world of today, where many young, armed, intoxicated, honor-conscious bachelors have reverted to frontier conditions. Violent Land combines social science with an engrossing narrative that spans and reinterprets the history of violence and social disorder in America...

Soon after the open spaces of Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa were settled in the mid 1800s by immigrants from the eastern United States and Europe, county schools were established in the region. By the 1890s these states boasted the highest rates of literacy in the United States. This study examines the women teachers who were responsible for educating the prairie children. This lively book draws on diaries, journals, letters, oral histories, and numerous period photographs to illuminate the schoolwomen's lives. In large part they were natives of the region, often teenaged girls away from home for the first time. They taught under difficult circumstances and struggled to meet their students' needs. They also used all the means at their disposal - summer institutes, normal schools, and even reading programs by mail - to upgrade their own educational credentials. Part One of the book examines the establishment of schools, teacher education, and working and living conditions. Part Two offers the narratives of five women's lives, from short-term teachers to career professionals. Their accounts provide an important addition to the professional heritage of women teachers.

WAS is the story of Dorothy. Orphaned as a child in the 1870s, she goes to live in Kansas with her Aunty Em and Uncle Henry. They face drought and poverty. They face each other. Alone, abused, Dorothy meets an itinerant actor called Frank and inspires a masterpiece. From the settling of the West and the heyday of the Hollwywood studios to the glittering megalopolis of modern Los Angeles, WAS is the story of all our childhoods. "Every once in awhile I remember just how f***ing good Was by Geoff Ryman is, and I get all sniffly all over again. I wish more people read it. You should be more people" - Catherynne M. Valente
