Buenavista--an agricultural place transformed into a congested semi suburbanite setting because of progress. The book recalls the struggles of the poor but resilient early Kamarinians, mostly landless but hardworking peasants who toiled the land of the well-to-do landowners just to exist meagerly. This is the story of the rural people, derogatorily referred to as "mga taga bundok" (the mountain people). They worked hard not to prove their worth but to survive. They survived because they were resilient; they endured because they were God-fearing people. They are the people of the barrio, and they have nothing to be ashamed of. They are proud of who they are and what they are.
Electro-optic Photonic Circuits
This book reports new findings in the fields of nonlinear optics, quantum optics and optical microscopy. It presents the first experimental device able to transform an input Gaussian beam into a non-diffracting Bessel-like beam. The modulation mechanism, i.e. electro-optic effect, allows the device to be fast, miniaturizable and integrable into solid state arrays. Also presented is an extensive study of the superposition of Bessel beams and their propagation in turbid media, with the aim of realizing field that is both localized and non-diffracting. These findings have been implemented in a light-sheet microscope to improve the optical sectioning. From a more theoretical point of view this work also tackles the problem of whether and how a single particle is able to entangle two distant systems. The results obtained introduce fundamental limitations on the use of linear optics for quantum technology. Other chapters are dedicated to a number of experiments carried out on disordered ferroelectrics including negative intrinsic mass dynamics, ferroelectric supercrystals, rogue wave dynamics driven by enhanced disorder and first evidence of spatial optical turbulence.
The Transatlantic Circulation of Novels Between Europe and Brazil, 1789-1914
This book brings a renewed critical focus to the history of novel writing, publishing, selling and reading, expanding its viewing beyond national territories. Relying on primary sources (such as advertisements, censorship reviews, publisher and bookstore catalogues), the book examines the paths taken by novels in their shifts between Europe and Brazil, investigates the flow of translations in both directions, pays attention to the successful novels of the time and analyses the critical response to fiction in both sides of the Atlantic. It reveals that neither nineteenth century culture can be properly understood by focusing on a single territory, nor literature can be fully perceived by looking only to the texts, ignoring their material existence and their place in social and economical practices.
