A catalogue of an exhibition at the Leeds City Art Galleries, April-June 1987. Pp. 44-48, "The Primitive Within: The Question of Race in Epstein's Career, 1917-1929," by Elizabeth Barker, examines the factor of antisemitism and racial prejudice in the criticism of Jacob Epstein's (1880-1959) sculpture, especially in the period following World War I which saw a rise in antisemitism in Great Britain. Gives examples of references to Epstein's "racial art, " his preference for the primitive, attacks on his art as an example of an international Jewish conspiracy in the arts, and his unsuitability as a Jew to portray Christian themes.

After a short, turbulent life in France, Germany and Britain, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska was killed in the trenches in 1915 at the age of twenty-three. A protege of Ezra Pound and a fellow champion of Vorticism, he was a member of the legendary pre-war London circle that included Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein and Roger Fry, and by the time of his death he had already produced a body of work that established him as one of the key figures of twentieth-century sculpture. A pioneering direct carver, his bold use of semi-abstract sculptural forms and organic dynamism were an acknowledged influence on Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. He was also a brilliant draughtsman and his succinct, candid drawings have been as sought after as his sculpture. Gaudier-Brzeska: Life and Art is the first major study of his life and work. Based on extensive research and incorporating the first catalogue raisonne of his sculpture, it is accompanied by over 100 photographs taken specially for the book by David Finn.

Fifty years after the Second Vatican Council, architectural historian Robert Proctor examines the transformations in British Roman Catholic church architecture that took place in the two decades surrounding this crucial event. Inspired by new thinking in theology and changing practices of worship, and by a growing acceptance of modern art and architecture, architects designed radical new forms of church building in a campaign of new buildings for new urban contexts. A focussed study of mid-twentieth century church architecture, Building the Modern Church considers how architects and clergy constructed the image and reality of the Church as an institution through its buildings. The author exa...
