Brought up in a Christian home, he was converted at an early age, and was fond of books. He taught himself Hebrew and Greek. E.W. spent his working life as a civil servant in the Patent Office. It was widely believed that his working life enabled him to apply the same principles of analysis, conciseness and definiteness to his ministry.
