The conversion of Armenia is traditionally dated to 314 when Gregory the Illuminator (c. 240-332) baptized King Trdat (298-330) and the royal family. Not until the fifth century did there develop both a Christian literature for Armenians in the Armenian languages, and the beginnings of a literary tradition in several genres which provided a coherent argument against the old religion of Zoroastrianism and made for the creation of Armenia as a Christian nation. This volume consists of sixteen essays, most of which are revised versions of papers read at a symposium held in May 1995 in Jerusalem at the Hebrew University and the Institute for Advanced Studies. Students of various religious and cultural traditions present their research in Jewish and Christian biblical interpretation. Fields covered include the Second Temple Period (Dead Sea Scrolls and the Life of Adam and Eve), Rabbinic literature, Early Greek and Syriac Antiochene exegesis, Syriac literature, Armenian reflections of Greek and Syriac exegesis (esp. the Armenian translations and reworkings of Eusebius of Emesa, Ephrem the Syrian and Jacob of Edessa), Ethiopic commentary tradition. Particular attention is devoted to the interrelationship between various traditions, e.g. Jewish and Christian, Greek and Syriac, Syriac and Armenian. The volume gives some telescoped insight into the cultural complexity of the Near East in Late Antiquity, where dynamic processes of cultural and religious interaction were continuously at work.
The idea of publishing an extensive Encyclopaedic Prosopographical Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilization (EPLBHC) was conceived in Greece, where - with Alexios Savvides as founding editor - the first volume of the Greek EPLBHC was prepared and eventually appeared in 1996. Six volumes have been published so far, the last two (V-VI) in early summer 2006, covering letters alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon, but obviously not including C, which in Greek is divided to a large extent under K (kappa) and to a lesser extent under ? (khi). On the other hand, the gamma entries will appear under G in the English edition. Volumes I to IV of the Greek edition (1996-2002), accompanied by a separate bibliographical volume on secondary works reaching the year 1998 (2000), have been extensively cited both in lengthy reviews and footnote references. Thus, it was recently decided to continue the project on a much larger scale and to launch it in English, in this way opening it to a much wider reading public. The Greek project will continue, as well, with each project complementing the other.

In this first of a massive three-volume work, Seta B. Dadoyan studies the Armenian experience in the medieval Islamic world and takes the reader through hitherto undiscovered paradigmatic cases of interaction with other populations in the region. Being an Armenian, Dadoyan argues, means having an ethnic ancestry laden with narratives drawn from the vast historic Armenian habitat. This first study of its kind cuts across and brings together the political and cultural histories of the medieval Near East. The peculiar episode of the Fatimid Armenians (1074-1163) and other phenomena earlier on are given their proper background and context; the 'Armenian Period' in the last century of the Fatimid caliphate in Egypt is shown to be a major phase in the perpetual alliance between Armenian sectarians and Muslims. The reconstruction of this to date unstudied subject also reveals new relevant data. Through its methodology, this book proposes fresh criteria and perspectives for the evaluation of patterns of cultural and political interaction in Near Eastern history.
