The true meaning of Christmas has always been the unexpected birth of New Life in a most degraded, forgotten, even despised place. There was a time when that location was imagined as a stable in Bethlehem. In our traditional telling, the savior was born into a forsaken shelter surrounded by animals. In the early 20th century, that unexpected location was No Man¿s Land -- the devastated landscape between the enemy trenches.Come on a pilgrimage of cultural healing with the author down the road, N365, between Ypres and Messines, Belgium, to honor and grow the Spirit of Peace on Earth on the night of its centennial.

Wagner, Schumann, and the Lessons of Beethoven's Ninth

"Reynolds shows that the stylistic advances made by Richard Wagner and Robert Schumann in 1845-46 stemmed from a deepened understanding of Beethoven's techniques and strategies in the Ninth Symphony, particularly the use of counterpoint involving contrary motion. The trail of influences that Reynolds explores extends back to the music of Bach and ahead to Tristan and Isolde, as well as to Brahms's First Symphony."--Provided by publisher.

Nurturing Creativity in the Classroom

Nurturing Creativity in the Classroom is a groundbreaking collection of essays by leading scholars, who examine and respond to the tension that many educators face in valuing student creativity but believing that they cannot support it given the curricular constraints of the classroom. Is it possible for teachers to nurture creative development and expression without drifting into curricular chaos? Do curricular constraints necessarily lead to choosing conformity over creativity? This book combines the perspectives of top educators and psychologists to generate practical advice for considering and addressing the challenges of supporting creativity within the classroom. It is unique in its balance of practical recommendations for nurturing creativity and thoughtful appreciation of curricular constraints. This approach helps ensure that the insights and advice found in this collection will take root in educators' practice, rather than being construed as yet another demand placed on their overflowing plate of responsibilities.

Ship Island was used as a French base of operations for Gulf Coast maneuvers and later, during the War of 1812, by the British as a launching point for the disastrous Battle of New Orleans. But most memorably, Ship Island served as a Federal prison under the command of Union Major General Benjamin F. Butler during the Civil War. This volume traces this fascinating and somewhat sinister history of Ship Island. The main focus of the book is a series of rosters of the men imprisoned. Organized first by the state in which the soldier enlisted and then by the company in which he served, entries are listed alphabetically by last name and include information such as beginning rank; date and place of enlistment; date and place of capture; physical characteristics; and, where possible, the fate and postwar occupation of the prisoner.
