The Misfortunes of Alonso Ramírez described the incredible adventures of a poor Spanish American carpenter who was taken captive by British pirates near the Philippines and forced to work for them for two years. Il racontait comment un charpentier de Porto Rico, capturé aux Philippines par des pirates anglais, avait enduré les sévices des forbans et assisté à leurs déprédations de la mer de Chine jusqu’en Atlantique. Relâché aux commandes d’une frégate, il avait ensuite fait naufrage sur une côte déserte du Yucatán. L’ouvrage, rapportant d’invraisemblables aventures, a longtemps été considéré comme un roman (picaresque), le premier jamais écrit en Amérique espagnole. Dans une enquête passionnante introductive à la traduction française des Infortunes, Fabio López Lázaro démontre qu’il s’agit d’un récit véridique – quoique fort suspect. Mais surtout, traquant Ramírez au long de son tour du monde, il ouvre des perspectives nouvelles sur l’histoire de la piraterie dans ses relations ambivalentes avec les premiers empires coloniaux planétaires.
