Day Starters for Students

For most students, getting behind the wheel of life-and the Christian life-seems pretty easy. Sure, there have been a few unexpected turns and potholes along the way, but most students have yet to encounter the BIG STUFF in the road. The BIG STUFF, however, IS coming-and it's important to be ready when it does. In this devotional, Greg Johnson offers students 60 readings based on the Psalms to help prepare them for the challenges ahead, from handling peer pressure to controlling anger to dealing with loss. With practical questions that encourage students to think through their own areas of struggle and vulnerability, this is an essential book for navigating the ups and downs of teenage life.

Words That Change Everything offers hope and practical strategies to help women speak God’s truth to their unbridled and often debilitating emotions. Worry, anxiety, and fear saturate our world today more than ever—from acts of terrorism to economic downturns. But many women face real fears in their own homes—death, illness, job loss, betrayal, rejection, and dozens of other threats that challenge their family’s well being. As women recognize and understand the warnings signs of worry and negative self-talk, they can employ strategies to navigate their overwhelming anxiety and hopeless thoughts. Most Christian women know the Bible encourages them not to worry about anything, but few women know how to respond to their worries, especially in a crisis. Words That Change Everything offers true personal stories with biblical applications to help everyday women understand the purpose of their God-given emotions and identify biblical prayer strategies to help them confront their worries.

Coffin Corner Boys

"Gripping…filled with…dramatic escapes, moments of surprising humanity, and acts of bravery." —Publishers Weekly A Story of Adventure, Survival, Loyalty, and Brotherhood Taking off from England on March 16, 1944, young Lt. George Starks and the nine-man crew of his Flying Fortress were assigned to the “coffin corner,” the most exposed position in the bomber formation headed for Germany. They never got there. Shot down over Nazi-occupied France, the airmen bailed out one by one, scattered across the countryside. Miraculously, all ten survived, but as they discarded their parachutes in the farmland of Champagne, their wartime odyssey was only beginning. Alone, with a broken foot and ...

The Influence of Music on the Development of the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee)

This book examines the influence of music on the development of the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee). This narrative is historically driven, but relies upon an interdisciplinary approach to draw on the insights of ecclesiology, theology, liturgiology, church development, and especially music. This study utilizes a chronological and systematic approach to the relationship between music and the Church of God in the United States during the first 125 years of the denomination’s history, from 1886 to 2011. For over a century, music has been an often-neglected dialogue partner at the table of academic discussion and this research argues for recognition and a proper place in Pentecostal history. Along with primary and secondary sources, the important element of “living archives” is investigated in this work; these are interviews with people who participated in historical music events in the Church of God. The book also relies upon musical examples to explore the influence of music upon the shaping of the denomination’s history and theology.
