World of Hard Use

WORLD OF HARD USE is about earning that bread and the dignity of our labors. These poems are about work and workers, their ambitions and frustrations: blue, white, and pink collar workers; construction workers, factory workers, workers in offices, academies, kitchens. . . . They are about the employed and the unemployed; the exploited, and the marginalized. They are about hope and despair, resilience and endurance. -- Poems of doers and dreamers, artists and poets, of creativity and aspiration, success and failure. Poems about life, how we live our lives and strive to make them meaningful.

Faye Tedder

Ive always thought that if something went wrong, it was my fault, said Faye as we began our journey together as interviewer and subject. As I approached this frail woman who as of lately, has been through quite an ordeal, she began to smile while tears streamed down her face. Stop that, said her husband, Alex, of 40 years. He knew just how much this biography meant to Faye; the full meaning of the interview brings tears to Fayes eyes. I greeted her and sat down in the chair beside her bed. As I looked all around the room, I couldnt help but notice all of the machines that were placed there to help her breathe and to monitor her respiratory system. One has to understand that Faye was sufferin...

Voices of King Philip's War

While the story of the Great Plains Indians has been well documented, the history of the Woodland cultures of New England has been largely ignored. The Algonquian nations of the east were effectively annihilated before the dominant European culture cared to record the intellectual and emotional experience of the people they displaced. In Voices of King Philip's War, Faye George allows these strong Native American personalities to passionately speak their roles in the tragic drama of that war.

There has been a tremendous amount of renewed interest in the output of Britain's Hammer Films. But there remain a great number of worthwhile British horror films, made at the same time by other companies, that have received little attention. The author provides a comprehensive listing of British horror films--including science fiction, fantasy, and suspense films containing horror-genre elements--that were released between 1956 and 1976, the "Golden Age" of British horror. Entries are listed alphabetically by original British title, from Vincent Price in The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) to Zeta One (1969). Entries also include American title, release information, a critique of the film, and the film's video availability. The book is filled with photographs and contains interviews with four key figures: Max J. Rosenberg, cofounder of Amicus Productions, one of the period's major studios; Louis M. Heyward, former writer, film executive and producer; Aida Young, film and television producer; and Gordon Hessler, director of such films as The Oblong Box and Murders in the Rue Morgue.

The Loss of the Schooner KESTREL

The Loss of the Schooner Kestrel & Other Poems is a contemporary book of sea poetry based on recreational boating and commercial fishing. The boats in Dey’s poems are many and varied, and he writes about them in both literal and figurative ways. He regards yachts not as images of conspicuous consumption but as vehicles of trial and transport, and in this he is revolutionary. He sees them in the continuum of ships. The title poem is a narrative about the predicament of a modern sailor in a traditional battle against an ageless sea.
