Francisca Silva

Brooklyn-based artist Francisca Silvas (b. 1984) first artists book, 25 Memoranden, presents a shrill, diverse and beguiling conglomerate of poetry, sculpture, painting, drawing, textiles and tattoos in a small but powerful package. Born to Chilean political refugees in 1984 in Switzerland, Silva studied fine arts in Zu'rich, moved to Berlin in 2012 and then returned to Switzerland in 2015 before moving to Brooklyn. An ever-evolving work of art herselfSilva is covered in tattoos, most of which she draws and inks in herself. She calls herself Macho, which is also the name of her one-woman publishing house. Silva considers the word combinations in her book not as sayings or slogans, but as poetry in the form of 25 memoranda or notes on love. Weaving her way in eng, German and Spanish through the stormy seas of an ambivalent soul, Silva charts her course through courting, conquest and consummation.

Waste Valorisation Using Ionic Liquids

Waste Valorisation Using Ionic Liquids

Modern societies produce large amounts of waste of many different types. This presents a problem in terms of management or disposal to prevent harm to human health and the environment. Additionally it represents a loss of potentially useful resources. In the circular economy concept nothing would ever become waste because everything would be re-usable or its components recoverable. Ionic liquids provide a potential route for valorisation of different waste types, paving the way for a circular economy and a more sustainable world. Covering various types of waste, including municipal, industrial, electronic, and medical, while addressing patented and commercial applications, this book aims to deliver a comprehensive, but also critical, perspective on the application of ionic liquids towards waste valorisation. Waste Valorisation Using Ionic Liquids is a useful resource for academic and industrial players, in the fields of chemistry, chemical and environmental engineering, and biotechnology, as well as anyone working on waste management and resource recovery.

Against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Oaxaca City, Kathryn Sloan analyzes rapto trials--cases of abduction and/or seduction of a minor--to gain insight beyond the actual crime and into the reality that testimonies by parents, their children, and witnesses reveal about courtship practices, generational conflict, the negotiation of honor, and the relationship between the state and its working-class citizens in post colonial Mexico. Unlike the colonial era where paternal rule was absolute, Sloan found that the state began to usurp parental authority in the home with the introduction of liberal reform laws. As these laws began to shape the terms of civil marriage, the courtroom played a more significant role in the resolution of familial power struggles and the restoration of family honor in rapto cases. Youths could now exert a measure of independence by asserting their rights to marry whom they wished. In examining these growing rifts between the liberal state and familial order within its lower order citizens, Sloan highlights the role that youths and the working class played in refashioning systems of marriage, honor, sexuality, parental authority, and filial obedience.

Strengthening smallholder producers' skills and market access

This case study report was written as a part of the Agriculture Human Capital Investment Study, funded by FAO Investment Centre and with the support of the International Food Policy Research Institute and the CGIAR Research Programme on Policies, Institutions and Markets (PIM) and the FAO Research and Extension Unit. This study analyses the impact of Chile´s Productive Alliance Programme (PAP) in terms of human capital development among small farmers. The programme, originally created in 2007 and serving now close to 3,600 small farmers in Chile, enhances the creation of commercial partnerships between these small farmers and larger companies, and funds and facilitates the conditions for the acquisition of skills and human capital among them to ensure its success.
