When Paula Modersohn-Becker's artist friends examined her extensive estate a few weeks after her death in 1907, they were overwhelmed. Only gradually did they realize that in the painter, dead at thirty-one, they had had an outstanding artist in their midst. Today Modersohn-Becker is regarded as one of the pioneers of Expressionism. Sculptor Bernhard Hoetger was one of the few people who recognized Modersohn-Becker's talent from an early stage. In 1920, he published a book collecting his memories of her, and they are reproduced as facsimile here. In addition to Hoetger's writings, the book offers an essay tracing Modersohn-Becker's life and work from a present-day perspective, together with a traditional biographical sketch and reproductions of forty of her most important works.

The artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and the writer Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) both convey in their work a sense of foreboding and confinement in bleak, ritualistic spaces. This book identifies many similarities between the spaces and activities they evoke and the initiatory practices of fraternal orders and secret societies that were an integral part of the social landscape of the Ireland experienced by both men during childhood. Many of these Irish societies modelled their ritual structures and symbolism on the Masonic Order. Freemasons use the term 'spurious Freemasonry' to designate those rituals not sanctioned by the Grand Lodge. The Masonic author Albert Mackey argues that the spurious forms were those derived from the various cult practices of the classical world and describes these initiatory practices as 'a course of severe and arduous trials'. This reading of Bacon's and Beckett's work draws on theories of trauma to suggest that there may be a disturbing link between Bacon's stark imagery, Beckett's obscure performances and the unofficial use of Masonic rites.

This book offers microhistories related to the transnational circulations of impressionism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The contributors rethink the role of "French" impressionism in shaping these iterations by placing France within its global and imperialist context and arguing that impressionisms might be framed through the mobility studies’ concept of "constellations of mobility." Artists engaging with impressionism in France, as in other global contexts, relied on, responded to, appropriated, and resisted elements of form and content based on fluid and interconnected political realities and market structures. Written by scholars and curators, the chapters demand reconsideration of impressionism as a historical construct and the meanings assigned to that term. This project frames future discussion in art history, cultural studies, and global studies on the politics of appropriating impressionism.

Beautifully designed, text-heavy and smart, Album is a deliberately unrepresentative compilation of genre-hopping textual and visual material placed in orbit around the work of the influential young Swiss artists Urs Fischer, Yves Netzhammer, Ugo Rondinone and Christine Streuli--all of whom were born in the early- to mid-1970s, and all of whom represented Switzerland at the 2007 Venice Biennale.
