Irvin McDowell was a prominent figure during the early months of the Civil War. With so much at stake, he was called upon to lead the Union’s largest Eastern Theater army. Pressed by the media and President Abraham Lincoln to move into Virginia and defeat the Confederates gathering there, McDowell led his neophyte army out to the plains of Manassas and was soundly defeated. McDowell went on to hold an independent command in northern Virginia during the Peninsula Campaign and serve in the Army of Virginia under Maj. Gen. John Pope during the disastrous Second Bull Run Campaign. Despite his significant contributions, a lack of personal papers left him in obscurity. Authors Frank Simione Jr. and Gene Schmiel used available sources to create a reliable and readable synthesis of the man and his career to fill a sizable gap in the historiography. Unless or until his private papers surface, Searching for Irvin McDowell will stand as the best treatment available.

Management of Chemical and Biological Samples for Screening Applications

Filling an obvious gap in the scientific literature, this practice-oriented reference is the first to tie together the working knowledge of large screening centers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological field. It spans the entire fi eld of this emerging discipline, from compound acquisition to collection optimization for specific purposes, to technology and quality control. In so doing, it applies two decades of expertise gathered by several large pharmaceutical companies to current and future challenges in high-throughput screening. With its treatment of libraries of small molecules as well as biobanks containing biomolecules, microorganisms and tissue samples, this reference is universally applicable for any molecular scientist involved in a large screening program.

Biotechnology: Quality Assurance and Validation provides a practical, detailed discussion of what issues Quality Assurance and Quality Control need to identify for effective control in the preparation of biotechnology products. The book presents a series of topics that define some of the unique challenges facing biotechnology companies in producing biopharmaceutical products. The topics selected address quality and validation issues, starting with the cryopreservation of cell lines through the filling and finishing of the product. It includes a validation guide, a clear presentation of how to use filtration effectively, a synoptic view of cleaning procedures, and much more.

Considerations for Viral Disease Eradication

Since smallpox eradication, the science of eradication has changed and with it, our definitions of what diseases are possible to eradicate. However, eradication must not beget complacency. As has been learned from past control or eradication attempts with a variety of viral diseases, from yellow fever to influenza, accidental or intentional reintroduction is a real threat-one that could strike anywhere and for which we need to be fully prepared. The criteria for assessing eradicability of polio, measles, and other viral infections have been debated extensively. With the elimination and eradication of several viral diseases on the horizon, issues surrounding the cessation of immunization acti...

Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories

Describes the combinations of standard and special microbiological practices, safety equip., and facilities which are recommended for work with a variety of infectious agents in various labs. This revision takes into account such issues as global concern about emerging and reemerging infectious diseases; increased interest in prion diseases with the identification of BSE in England; the occurrence of several lab-associated infections; increased concern regarding the national and international transfer of infectious microorganisms; and growing concerns about bioterrorism, and the increased security needs of our microbiological labs.
