Frank Steyaert est né en 1953 à Dendermonde, en Belgique. Son œuvre se rattache à la Nouvelle Céramique, un courant international émergeant dans les années 1970 et caractérisé notamment par une approche sculpturale réaliste. Artiste pluridisciplinaire, doté d?un énorme bagage technique, il est céramiste et auteur de bijoux, d?estampes, de meubles et d?éléments monumentaux en terre cuite intégrés à des projets d?architecture. Pour la première fois, ces aspects moins connus sont mis en perspective avec les diverses déclinaisons d?épaves de bateaux en céramique qui l?ont rendu célèbre. Ludovic Recchia, Directeur artistique du Centre Keramis, réunit différents auteurs, notamment Frédéric Bodet, Stéphanie Le Follic-Hadida, Marc Dubois et Carine Verleye, qui mettent magnifiquement en perspective les œuvres éclectiques de cet artiste surprenant. Cette monographie est éditée en collaboration avec Keramis, qui consacre une importante exposition rétrospective à l?artiste. Installé sur le site de l?ancienne faïencerie Boch à La Louvière, Keramis est un espace d?art et de création spécifiquement dédié au medium céramique.
Seeing Gent
The International Masters at KU Leuven draws students from all over the world to study on its English language course. Part of the attraction is the opportunity to study in Gent, a beautiful historic city famed for its architecture. Much remains of the medieval city that is characterised by tightly packed window-wall façades. In devising the Building Technology Workshop, I was keen to focus attention on this extraordinary resource: to closely observe, record and represent how a traditional European city is made. The requirements to draw by hand and make physical models sought to exercise the connection between eye and hand which can be of such great use to architects. The variety of the workshop output is testament to Gent's heterogeneity and an equally delightful introduction to each student's way of seeing.
