A writing workshop at UMass (University of Massachusetts) Dartmouth in the year 2043. The participants do not know in advance what tasks await them. It is almost always about exciting intercultural aspects, but without pointing a finger. Indirectly, the stories can also be seen as a call for integration, especially as the peculiarities of different cultures - in particular how they deal with sexuality - are highlighted. However, the common ground is always emphasized and not the divisive aspects. The fact that joy and sorrow are not neglected makes reading the book a continuous pleasure. Finally, the idea of setting the stories in the future opens up another appealing field.

Volume 2 treats, in great detail and, at times quite innovatively, the individual stages of development of the study of language as an autonomous discipline, from the growing awareness in 17th and 18th century Europe of genetic relationships among a host of languages to the establishment of comparative-historical Indo-European linguistics in the 19th century, from the generation of the Schlegels, Bopp, Rask, and Grimm to the Neogrammarians and the application of the comparative method to non-Indo-European languages from all over the globe. Typological linguistic interests, first synthesized by Humboldt, as well as the development of various other non-historical endeavours in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, such as language and psychology, semantics, phonetics, and dialectology, receive ample attention.
Essays in the History of Linguistics
The present volume follows the author's tradition of bringing together at certain intervals selections of articles which more often than not had previously been published in not easily accessible places, or which had not been published before. These papers do not typically represent mere reprints but in most instances thoroughly revised versions.This volume contains twelve articles organized under three headings, "Programmatic Papers in the History of Linguistics," "Studies in Linguistic Historiography," and "Sketches historiographical and (auto)biographical," plus as an appendix a complete list of Zellig Harris' writings as an illustration of Koerner's penchant for and belief in the importance of good bibliographies as a basis for historical research. While the first two sections, which take up the bulk of the volume, either show the author as an historian engage or demonstrate his work as a historiographer of 19th and 20th century linguistics, the third section is much shorter and less heavy going. Indexes of Biographical Names and of Subjects, Terms & Languages round out the volume, which also contains a number of portraits of linguists and other illustrations.

The German Language in Switzerland
This book offers a broad survey of issues relating to the German language in Switzerland. The initial focus is on the German-speaking community's relationship with the French, Italian and Romansh language communities. Consideration is then given to the complex issue of diglossia within the germanophone Swiss community, and the maintenance of both the Swiss German dialects and the Swiss German standard language as co-existent codes of equal status. The Swiss German dialects, the Swiss variety of standard German, and the influence of various foreign languages on both of these language forms are described in some detail. Finally, sociolinguistic issues affecting the German language in Switzerland are considered: the connection between social variation and linguistic change; language variation stemming from differences of age, sex and ethnic origin; and linguistic behaviour and phatic communication.

Der neue Band der Briefe an Pestalozzi umfasst die Zeit zwischen 1814 und Juli 1817 und damit das Ende Napoleons, den Wiener Kongress sowie die grosse europäische Wirtschaftskrise der Jahre 1816/17. Letztere wirkte sich ökonomisch nachteilig auf Pestalozzis Anstalt aus, die aufgrund der öffentlichen Fehden der Mitarbeiter ohnehin einen Rückgang der Schüler zu verkraften hatte. Daneben stehen die Aktivitäten im Zusammenhang mit der Einwerbung der Subskriptionen für die Gesamtausgabe der Werke Pestalozzis. Der unglaubliche Erfolg – über 1800 Subskriptionen gingen bloss auf die Ankündigung hin ein – steht für Pestalozzis europaweite Berühmtheit. Sein weitverzweigtes Netz an Kontakten umfasste Schulreformer, Regierungen, Adelige und Kaufleute von Russland über Siebenbürgen, London, Frankreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz bis nach Amerika. Die Briefe der Subskribenten bezeugen trotz Krise im Institut die grosse Verehrung, ja fast kultische Huldigung, die Pestalozzi zuteil wurde. In der Schweiz kann der Titel über die Neue Zürcher Zeitung bezogen werden.
