This volume contains the 5 invited papers and 72 selected papers that were presented at the Fifth International Conference on Industrial and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence. This is the first IEA/AIE conference to take place outside the USA: more than 120 papers were received from 23 countries, clearly indicating the international character of the conference series. Each paper was reviewed by at least three referees. The papers are grouped into parts on: CAM, reasoning and modelling, pattern recognition, software engineering and AI/ES, CAD, vision, verification and validation, neural networks, machine learning, fuzzy logic and control, robotics, design and architecture, configuration, finance, knowledge-based systems, knowledge representation, knowledge acquisition and language processing, reasoning and decision support, intelligent interfaces/DB and tutoring, fault diagnosis, planning and scheduling, and data/sensor fusion.
Computational Models of Reading is a reference book that can be used to learn about reading research and how computer models have been used to explain and simulate the mental processes involved in reading. These mental processes include the identification of printed words, the active construction of larger units of meaning (for example, of sentences), and the integration of the latter into memory so that a text can be understood and remembered. The final chapter describes a new model of reading, in its entirety, and then reports simulations showing how it explains important findings related to reading.
The present book is a result of a seven-year (1986-1992) national research program in cognitive science in Germany, presumably the first large scale cognitive science program there. Anchored in psychology, and therefore christened Wissenpsychologie (psychology of knowledge), it has found interdisciplinary resonance, especially in artificial intelligence and education. The past several decades have seen an explosion of interest in narrative, with this multifaceted object of inquiry becoming a central concern in a wide range of disciplinary fields and research contexts. As accounts of what happened to particular people in particular circumstances and with specific consequences, stories have come to be viewed as a basic human strategy for coming to terms with time, process, and change. However, the very predominance of narrative as a focus of interest across multiple disciplines makes it imperative for scholars, teachers, and students to have access to a comprehensive reference resource.
Nowadays, mental models are seen as crucial in systems design. Research is driven by the assumption that a better insight into a user's cognitive processes when using a system will improve design methods and provide friendly and efficient interfaces. The papers in this volume explore three fundamental issues: understanding the complexity of the intended worksystem, describing it by models and finally building the required powerful and usable system. The papers are an edited selection of those presented at the 8th interdisciplinary workshop on Mental Models and HCI, held in Austria in June 1989. They concentrate primarily on design issues, their theoretical background and the application of the concept of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Nevertheless, there are also contributions on theoretical topics and methodological questions.
This volume is derived from presentations given at a conference hosted in Boulder, Colorado in honor of the 60th birthday of Walter Kintsch. Though the contents of the talks, and thus the chapters, varied widely, all had one thing in common -- they were inspired to some degree by the work of Walter Kintsch. When making plans for an edited book centered around this conference, the editors had a primary goal: to acknowledge the wide variety of researchers and research areas Kintsch had influenced. As a consequence, one of the more unusual elements of this volume is the diversity of the contributors. Researchers from six different countries contributed chapters to this book which is loosely organized around three main thrusts of Kintsch's work: * text-based representations that explain how meaning in a text is constructed, * situation models which represent what the text is about rather than what a text literally says, and * the construction-integration model, Kintsch's most recent work in discourse comprehension.
