Karel Appel

On two groups of works by the CoBrA legend A cofounder of the CoBrA movement, Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921-2006) produced a turbulent oeuvre of expressive figuration. This book focuses on two work groups: his "object paintings," raw and colorful sculptures made from the 1940s to the '90s, and his late nude paintings and drawings created between 1985 and 1995.

Roger Raveel: Retrospection

An extensive retrospective dedicated to Roger Raveel (1921-2013), one of the most important Belgian painters of the second half of the 20th century Commemorating the centenary of the artist's birth in 2021, the Centre for Fine Arts - BOZAR will present an extensive retrospective dedicated to Roger Raveel (1921-2013), considered one of the most important Belgian painters of the second half of the twentieth century. While belonging to the generation of artists that emerged following the Second World War, flanked by Magritte and Panamarenko, Raveel radically defended his own independence from the values commonly associated with this generation, notably the supposed superiority of internationality over all forms of local anchorage. In today's context of globalized art and its associated stereotypes, Raveel's choice to draw inspiration from his immediate, intimate surroundings--while always being very well informed about trends in the international art scene--now seems revolutionary, even prophetic. Showcasing some 120 artworks from public and private collections, this catalogue seeks to demonstrate the singularity of Raveel's pictorial language as it took form over time.

To German painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz (b. 1941), it is blindingly obvious that art far transcends everyday life. Wherever possible he proclaims this view, which stands in stark contrast to the contemporary discourse, in which art has to compete with vulgar entertainment and lifestyle. In the media, he underlines his message with his impeccable and self-assured performance as the 'Painter prince'. The superiority of art to everyday life is likewise expressed in various ways in the architecture of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. This similarity is the point of departure for the forthcoming major retrospective of Lüperz's work. The exhibition will be arranged thematically rather than chronologically and will focus not only on recent work and the highlights of the artist's oeuvre, but also on the brilliant personality of Lüpertz himself.0Exhibition: Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (until 2.10.2011) 0.

Ultrashort Laser Pulses and Applications

Ten years ago, Stanley L. Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. Shank added a bibliography (1980-1983) in the second edition with approximately one thousand new references. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written. In particular, the reduction of the time scale of light pulses into the femtosecond range has opened up new experimental possibilities never even foreseen in the preceding literature. The vast literature with countless ideas and applications makes it impossible for a single person to write a compreh...

Reviews of Reactive Intermediate Chemistry

The chemistry of reactive intermediates is central to a modern mechanistic and quantitative understanding of organic chemistry. Moreover, it underlies a significant portion of modern synthetic chemistry and is integral to a molecular view of biological chemistry. Reviews in Reactive Intermediate Chemistry presents an up-to-date, authoritative guide to this fundamental topic. Although it follows Reactive Intermediate Chemistry by the same authors, it serves as a free-standing resource for the entire chemical and biochemical community. The book includes: Relevant, practical applications Coverage of such topics as mass spectrometry methods, reactive intermediates in interstellar medium, quantum mechanical tunnelling, solvent effects, reactive intermediates in biochemical processes, and excited state surfaces Discussions of emerging areas, particularly those involving dynamics and theories Concluding sections identifying key directions for future research are provided at the end of each chapter

Ultrashort Laser Pulses in Biology and Medicine

Learn about the many biological and medical applications of ultrashort laser pulses. The authors highlight and explain how the briefness of these laser pulses permits the tracing of even the fastest processes in photo-active bio-systems. They also present a variety of applications that rely on the high peak intensity of ultrashort laser pulses. Easy-to-follow examples cover non-linear imaging techniques, optical tomography, and laser surgery.
