National (and transnational) regulations significantly transform rural areas. These changes can be exemplified through the recent developments in the field of energy production from biomass, which fostered the conversion of conventional agriculture towards localized energy industries. This is not simply an economic but also a cultural transformation. What happens when the social arrangements and cultural understandings change alongside shifting flows of energy, which developed through a particular energy regime? This volume describes the multiplicity of opportunities and failures connected to a strategy of advancing (a particular form of) renewable energy. The study elucidates how long-term objectives have to be disentangled into short-term, local processes of implementation.

Intensivtierhaltung

European Products

On the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, rural villages, traditional artefacts, even atmospheres and experiences are considered heritage. Heritage making not only protects, but also produces, things, people, and places. Since the Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004, heritage making and Europeanization are increasingly intertwined in Greek-Cypriot society. Against the backdrop of a long-term ethnographic engagement, the author argues that heritage emerges as an increasingly standardized economic resource, a “European product.” Implemented in historic preservation, rural tourism, culinary traditions, nature protection, and urban restoration projects, heritage policy has become infused with transnational market regulations and neoliberal property regimes.

Nature and Enactment of Tasks for Early English as a Foreign Language Teaching

This ethnographic case study is set within a collaborative research project in which teachers and researchers investigate early English as a Foreign Language (eEFL) tasks in theory and practice in German primary schools. Results are obtained through an interpretation of multiple sources within an interdiscursive, multi-perspectived research agenda. The results suggest that eEFL tasks can emerge during an interplay of four key teaching practices: doing school, providing space for learners to communicate, building a vocabulary and teaching the spoken language.
