In Search of the Maquis : Rural Resistance in Southern France 1942-1944
This is a study of the Maquis in southern France, the Resisters who took to the woods and hills in the struggle against the German Occupation in the Second World War. H. R. Kedward's detailed and perceptive account explores what participation in the Maquis meant for those involved both at the time and subsequently. He examines the motivations of the maquisards and how the circumstances of occupation and resistance affected the ways of life of rural communities in the south of France. This is a rich and original book, which achieves a fruitful integration of extensive archival research and oral history. Dictionary of French Family Names in North America
This dictionary contains data not only on the origins of French surnames in Québec and Acadia, a great many of which eventually spread to many parts of North America, but also on those which arrived in the United States directly from various French-speaking European and Caribbean countries. In addition to providing the etymology of the original surnames, it also lists the multifarious variants that have developed over the last four centuries. A unique feature of this work in comparison to other onomastics dictionaries is the inclusion of genealogical information on most of the Francophone migrants to this continent, something which has been rendered possible not only by the excellent record-keeping in French Canada since the very beginnings of the colony, but also through the explosion of such data on the internet in the last couple of decades. In sum, this dictionary serves the dual purpose of providing information on the meanings of French family names on the North American continent, as well as on the migrants who brought them there.
Election, Barth, and the French Connection
Karl Barth's famous account of the doctrine of election in his mammoth Church Dogmatics has been described as the heart of his theology--a great hymn to the grace of God in Christ. He maintained that "we must look away from all others, and excluding all side glances or secondary thoughts, we must look only upon the name of Jesus Christ." God's election is primarily about his self-decision or self-determination, not about his election of individuals. In this book we discover Barth's fascinating French connection: pastor/theologian Pierre Maury (1890-1956). His close friendship, and especially a paper he gave in 1936 helped stimulate Barth's reflection. Also included are some never-before-translated works of Maury as well as a revision of a previously published piece on predestination. Four theologians then reflect on their significance for us today from historical, textual, pastoral, and theological standpoints, and seek to draw conclusions for us in our contemporary setting, sixty to eighty years from their original composition.
