Battle and Bloodshed
This collection of articles is the result of an interdisciplinary Medieval Studies conference held at the University of Sheffield in 2009. Brutality and aggression were a stark reality of everyday life in the Middle Ages; from individual rebellions through family feuds to epic wars, a history of medieval warfare could easily be read as a history of medieval violence. This volume goes beyond such an analysis by illustrating just how pervasive the nature of war could be, influencing not only medieval historiography and chronicle tradition, but also other disciplines such as art, architecture, literature and law. The overarching and multi-faceted themes bring together both iconic aspects of medieval warfare such as armour and the Crusades, as well as taking in the richness of textual traditions and matters of crucial importance at the time—the justification for war and the means by which peace can be re-established.
Aggressive and Violent Peasant Elites in the Nordic Countries, C. 1500-1700
This book investigates the forms that the aggression and violence of peasant elites could take in early modern Fennoscandia, and their role within society. The contributors highlight the social stratification, inner divisions, contradictions and conflicts of the peasant communities, but also pay attention to the elite as leaders of resistance against the authorities. With the formation of more centralised states, the elites’ status and room for agency diminished, but regional and temporal variations were great in this relatively drawn-out process, and there still remained several favourable contexts for their agency. Even though the peasant elite was not a homogenous entity, the chapters in this collection present us one uniting feature – the peasant elites’ tendency to assert themselves with an active and aggressive agency, even if this led to very different outcomes.

Offering a radical new interpretation of the institutional church and its social consequences in England, Ian Forrest argues that between 1200 and 1500 the ability of bishops to govern depended on the cooperation of local people known as trustworthy men and shows how the combination of inequality and faith helped make the medieval church. This book analyzes the organization of the Venetian military structure in the Mainland Dominion in the Early Modern Period, particularly from the point of view of the everyday management of the army by rural communities. It explains the evolution of the Venetian military structure using an economic perspective, underlining that the military needs of the Republic had to be constantly moderated by the economic effects of the military requests on the local rural economy, but also considering the economic opportunities coming from military contracts.

En conjunt, es recullen més de 1.300 peces documentals que abasten el primer quart del segle XV. Es tracta, doncs, d'una aportació de relleu per al coneixement de la història social de la noblesa valenciana en una època -el Quatre-cents- plena de significacions, però també per la història del dret, atesa la rica informació sobre plets, sentències i altres actuacions judicials en el marc del règim foral vigent fins a la Nova Planta.
Rolnictvo na pozdně středověkém Chebsku
Středověké rolnictvo je pro historiky velkou a mimořádně přitažlivou neznámou, neboť v sobě skrývá klíč k pochopení pozdějšího ekonomického růstu, nebo naopak zarážející stagnace některých evropských regionů. V hrubých obrysech a jen torzovitě známe sociální struktury a instituce středověkého rolnictva, o skutečné vnitřní dynamice a demografických aspektech však nevíme takřka nic. Předkládaná monografie reaguje na tuto poznávací výzvu a využívá dosud nepovšimnuté a evropsky unikátní písemné prameny, které se dochovaly pro chebský městský stát. Díky nim přináší pozoruhodně detailní pohled na sociální mobilitu, migraci a způsob sociální reprodukce pozdně středověkého rolnictva, včetně nových pohledů na fenomén masového pustnutí venkovských sídlišť v tomto období.
