Three manuscripts: The early history of the international copyright movement in America, 1888; Historical sketch of the Astor Library from its origin to its incorporation with the New York Public Library, 1893-1895 ; and Recollections, as told to his grandson Walter Bobette, about 1890. Saunders' Recollections manuscript includes accounts of his voyage to America; aid to William Irving, W.C. Bryant, and Edgar Allen Poe for international copyright; services with W.C. Bryant and Harper Bros.; rejection of Herman Melville's Typee by Harpers; accounts of personalities J.G. Bennett, Louis Kossuth, John Murray, Samuel Lover, J.R. Thompson, R.W. Emerson, Lady Blessington, Count d' Orsay, Jenny Lind, Henry Ward Beecher, Horace Greeley; distinguished visitors to Astor Library; and recollections of London. Also includes a note by Walter Bobbette and a letter by A.L. Bader.
Mafeking Memories
Saunders gives us a vivid and unique soldier's-eye view of the siege, the daily life, the hunger, the regular bombardment from long-range Boer guns, the forays against the Boers, and the antics of Baden-Powell, who tried to keep up the morale of the garrison. Saunders's descriptions of the countryside are graphic too, revealing an artist's sensitivity. His account nicely supplements others written by journalists and by prominent officials at Mafeking. The editor, who obtained the memoir from the Saunders family, provides an introduction that places the siege in its historical context.
