Jewish Literatures and Cultures in Southeastern Europe
The volume offers an overview of the diverse Jewish experiences in Southeastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and the various forms and strategies of their representation in literature, the arts, historiography and philosophy. Southeastern Europe is characterized by a high degree of ethnical, religious and cultural diversity. Jews, whether Sephardim, Ashkenazim or Romaniots – settling there in different periods – experienced divergent life worlds which engendered rich cultural production. Though recent scholarly and popular interest in this heterogeneous region has grown impressively, Jewish cultural production is still an under-researched area. The volume offers an overview of the diverse Jewish experiences in Southeastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and the various forms and strategies of their representation in literature, the arts, historiography and philosophy, thus creating a dialogue between Jewish studies, Balkan studies, and current literary and cultural theories.
Carl Einstein in Documents and His Collaboration with Georges Bataille
The short-lived art magazine Documents (1929-30) has since the eighties become an object of increasing fascination to art historians and students of French intellectual culture. The light shed on Documents has not, however, dispelled the sense of mystery surrounding its two years of exuberant production, and sudden demise. What actually happened? The main figure associated with the magazine has been the writer Georges Bataille but a German novelist and art historian Carl Einstein was also centrally involved. What was he doing in Documents, and why has he disappeared from the picture? This book traces Einstein´s role, detailing his charged collaboration with the younger Bataille, which contributed to Documents´ collapse.

Based on hitherto overlooked archival material, this book reveals Nell Walden’s significant impact on the Sturm organisation through a feminist reading of supportive labour that highlights the centrality of collaborative work within the modern art world. This book introduces Walden as an ardent collector of modern and indigenous art and critically contextualises her own art production in relation to expressionist concepts of art and to gendered ideas on abstraction and decoration. Visual analyses highlight how she collaborated with professional and experimental women photographers during the Weimar era and how the circulation of these photographs served as a means to intervene in the public sphere of culture in interwar Germany. Finally, the book provides an analysis of Walden’s continuing work for Der Sturm after her voluntary exile from Germany to Switzerland in 1933 and highlights the importance of women’s supportive labour for the canonisation and institutionalisation of modern art in museums and archives. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, and gender studies.

Founded in 2011, The Research Journal of Germanic Antiquity is an independent scholarly journal devoted to preserving, translating, and circulating all early modern German religious texts (12th - 20th century). The underlying goal of this journal is to reprint rare German publications to introduce them to a new generation of researchers while placing them into their historical context. This journal also seeks to publish articles on the subject of Western Esotericism including but not limited to Ariosophy, Atlanteology, Theosophy, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, Spiritualism, Norse mythology, Mesmerism, etc. We especially encourage the submission of articles that engage the subject of racism within these traditions.
