The documented resources date from the late 18th through the mid-20th centuries. Approximately 90 percent of the surveyed properties are located within the 30 historically African- American towns, villages, hamlets or neighborhoods that the project's cosponsor, the Black History Committee of the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library, identified during their African American Community mapping project in 2001. In Freedom by Any Means, Betty DeRamus explains that “Much of what we think we know about African American history isn't completely true.” Slave freedom isn’t limited to the usual story—slaves gained their freedom by running away, being freed by their owners, buying their way out of bondage, or having someone else buy them. But history doesn’t account for the s...

Emancipation Day celebrations come to life in the pages of this book and illuminate the community that created them. Part memoir and part history, it demonstrates how rural African Americans cultivated racial pride and civic activism that laid the groundwork for the civil rights movement. The celebrations chapter and the epilogue are written in the first person and are rich and evocative. The author presents a well-documented history and informed interpretation of the Loudoun County Emancipation Association and its role in the community. The biographical directory highlights numerous men and women whose civic contributions might otherwise go unrecognized. The book includes many maps, photographs and drawings. -- From text on p.
