Studies in West Frisian Grammar

In this volume, Germen de Haan gives a multi-faceted view of the syntax, sociolinguistics, and phonology of West-Frisian. The author discusses distinct aspects of the syntax of verbs in Frisian: finiteness and Verb Second, embedded root phenomena, the verbal complex, verbal complementation, and complementizer agreement. Because Frisian has minority language status and is of interest to sociolinguists, the author reviews the linguistic changes in Frisian under the influence of the dominant Dutch language and, more generally, reflects on how to deal with contact-induced change in grammar. Finally, in three phonological articles, the author discusses nasalization in Frisian, the putatively symmetrical vowel inventory of Frisian, and the variation between schwa + sonorant consonants and syllabic sonorant consonants.

"Swallows and Floating Horses is a comprehensive bilingual anthology of Frisian literature, including nearly a hundred and fifty poems and prose extracts from all historical periods and all areas where Frisian is spoken and written, accompanied by new translations into English by a group of respected translators. The editors have selected a richly coloured collection of text fragments that tell the story of the Frisians and their language, historically the closest to English - legends, stories, reminiscences, journalism, drama, children's rhymes, extracts from the enigmatic Oera Linda Book, as well as other surprising texts. The anthology begins with the ancient Old Frisian laws and concludes with examples of contemporary poetry and prose. Frisian is mainly spoken in the present Dutch province of Friesland (Fryslân), but varieties of Frisian are also spoken along parts of the North Sea coast of Germany." --back cover.

Multilingual Europe

This book offers an inclusive perspective on the constellation of languages in Europe by taking into account official state languages, regional minority languages and immigrant minority languages. Although "celebrating linguistic diversity" is one of the key propositions in the European discourse on multilingualism and language policies, this device holds for these three types of languages in a decreasing order. All three types of languages, however, are constituent parts of a multilingual European identity and should be taken into account in any type of language policy. Both facts and policies on multilingualism and plurilingual education are addressed in case studies at the national and Eu...

The Other Languages of Europe

The book offers demographic, sociolinguistic, and educational perspectives on the status of both regional and immigrant languages in Europe and in a wider international context.
