Making European Masculinities
As sport has grown, progressively replacing religion, in its power to excite passion, provide emotional escape, offer fraternal (and increasingly sororital) bonding, it has come to loom larger and larger in the lives of Europeans and others. It has become an inescapable reality linking public environment with intimate experience and thus offers the historian an opportunity to inspect and attempt to grasp all the dimensions of the recent past and their relative share in individual and collective experience. This collection considers the evolution of modern sport in Europe and examines its role in shaping masculine identity.

Internal Diversity
This book explores the interrelation between diversity in migrants’ internal relations and their experience of inequality in local and global contexts. Taking the case of Hamburg-based Iranians, it traces evaluation processes in ties between professionals – artists and entrepreneurs – since the 1930s, examining migrants’ potential to act upon hierarchical structures. Building on long-term ethnographic fieldwork and archival work, the book centers on differentiation, combining a diversity study with a focus on locality, with a transnational migration study, analysing strategies of capital creation and anthropological value theory. The analysis of migrants’ agency tackles questions of independence and cooperation in kinship, associations, transnational entrepreneurship and cultural events within the context of the position of Germany and Iran in the global politico-economic landscape. En cette période de crises des sociétés, des institutions et des idéologies, l'humour peut-il mettre en cause les valeurs dominantes ? Est-il toujours praticable en politique ? Peut-il servir à persuader et à séduire les électeurs lors d'une campagne électorale ? Les articles réunis dans ce dossier tentent de répondre à ces questions en étudiant l'humour et l’ironie dans la dernière campagne présidentielle. Ils montrent que, pendant cette campagne, les dessinateurs de presse ont joué sur les confrontations des valeurs partagées et sur nos représentations des politiciens. Il apparaît également, à travers ces études, qu’humour et ironie ont souvent imprégné non seulement le discours des médias, mais également celui des politiciens, qui en ont usé, de différentes façons, pour disqualifier l’adversaire et le tourner en dérision ou comme stratégie participant à la construction d’une image de soi. L’intérêt du dossier vient autant de son objet que de son approche, qui met en dialogue différentes perspectives complémentaires comme la pragmatique, la rhétorique, la sémiologie et l’analyse du discours.
