This book describes the challenges that deep carious lesions pose for dental practitioners, including the risk of endodontic complications and the difficulty of restorative treatment, and identifies options for overcoming these challenges on the basis of the best available evidence. The opening chapter sets the scene by discussing pathophysiology, histopathology, clinical symptomatology, and treatment thresholds. The various treatment options are then systematically presented and reviewed, covering non-selective, stepwise, and selective carious tissue removal and restoration, sealing of lesions using resin sealants or crowns, and non-restorative management approaches. In each case the curren...

The Hormones: Physiology, Chemistry, and Applications, Volume V provides information pertinent to the nature and function of hormones. This book provides a variety of topics, including pituitary hormones, thyroid, thyroid hormones, mammalian hormones, tumors and hormones, and some problems in endocrine medicine. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the knowledge of the structure and other chemical aspects of the hormones. This text then examines the effects of growth hormone on nitrogen retention and body composition and discusses the metabolic basis for the nitrogen-retaining action of growth hormone. Other chapters consider the biochemical pathways of metabolism and their control in thyroid tissue. This book discusses as well tumor induction in endocrine organs following hormonal imbalance. The final chapter deals with the many and varied causes of the spontaneous endocrine disorders. This book is a valuable resource for organic chemists, biochemists, endocrinologists, morphologists, physiologists, students, and research workers.

The mechanistic basis of chronic inflammation remains unclear. The research sheds new light on the immune cells expressing the activation markers HLA-DR and regulatory T cells (Tregs) and the cells expressing Siglec receptors as being key players in the immune system responsiveness to antigens and thus in lung tissue damage of chronic inflammation. The results help understand the mechanisms of action of common drugs used in COPD, such as formoterol, tiotropium, or corticosteroids, and point to novel drug targets. The chapters also deal with brain damaging effects, by far unrecognized, of inhaled corticosteroid therapy, a time-proven management of chronic inflammatory airway conditions; asthma being a case in point. Novel methods, likely less producing side effects, of macrolide antibiotics administration by inhalation are discussed, emphasizing not only bacteriostatic but also anti-inflammatory action.

Zirconia V drew 122 contributions from 19 countries. The papers provide an up-to-date picture of zirconia research and development around the world. There is still considerable interest in the theory and practice of transformation toughening together with the application of zirconia toughening to increasingly more complex composite systems. They also reflect a prominent development of recent years, the resurgence of international interst in the zirconia-based solid oxide fuel cell.
