Ulrich Becher
Ulrich Becher's publications have spanned fifty years, a career matched by few other Hitler exiles, for whom mere survival was a mark of distinction. Like most exile authors, Becher and his works stand outside the literary canon. Reception aesthetics, because it focuses on the audience and other social and cultural factors, provides a critical perspective that is especially informative in the study of lesser known authors. Computer-assisted statistical analysis makes possible the treatment of massive amounts of secondary material, thereby strengthening critical insights into the literary-historical process.
Ultracold Gases and Quantum Information
In recent years, there has been much synergy between the exciting areas of quantum information science and ultracold atoms. This volume, as part of the proceedings for the XCI session of Les Houches School of Physics (held for the first time outside Europe in Singapore) brings together experts in both fields. The theme of the school focused on two principal topics: quantum information science and ultracold atomic physics. The topics range from Bose Einstein Condensates to Degenerate Fermi Gases to fundamental concepts in Quantum Information Sciences, including some special topics on Quantum Hall Effects, Quantum Phase Transition, Interactions in Quantum Fluids, Disorder and Interference Phenomenoma, Trapped Ions and Atoms, and Quantum Optical Devices.
From Becher to Blume
With their collection, Cologne-based couple Ute and Eberhard Garnatz impressively demonstrate just how inspiring and contemporary a private art collection can actually be. Over decades they have assembled a body of work that celebrates painting just as much as photography. Sculptural works also form part of the collection. The Garnatz Collection bears witness to their enthusiasm and keen sense of quality. And, amidst all this, the proximity to the artists has always been important to them. Rather than owning a singular work, they follow the artistic development, and in some cases remain in exchange for years. This publication focuses on the photographic aspect of the Garnatz Collection and juxtaposes selected positions with those from the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur. Particularly interesting in this respect is the documentary-conceptual direction, as represented by Bernd and Hilla Becher. The Cologne institution is entrusted with the Becher Archive, and the Garnatz Collection also contains distinctive photographs by the artist couple. Works related stylistically by Candida Höfer, Thomas Ruff, and Thomas Struth have been included in this context.
