The Political Ecology of Household Water in Northern Ghana
Household water provides the entry point for this ethnography and study of institutional change. The book discusses the political economy of poverty and presents the polyphone discourse on water and the environment. It outlines water history and water rights from the 1970s onwards, and analyzes social dynamics. It offers a critical voice in the debate on climate change by arguing that local and global perceptions are not necessarily coherent.
Floods and Farmers
The Mekong Delta of Vietnam is extremely vulnerable to floods and, therefore, the establishment of dike systems is generally considered an appropriate approach to flood control. Based on intensive field work in the heart of the Delta, this dissertation investigates current dike planning practices, as well as its implementation at district and commune levels. The research reveals numerous shortcomings with regard to planning and shows that the dike system also produces adverse negative impacts on the ecosystems and livelihoods. Dissertation. Socio-political and Cultural Determinants of Diarrheal Disease in the Mekong Delta
This dissertation examines the cultural, social, environmental, and political factors that shape the spread of diarrhea in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. The case of the Mekong Delta shows why the spread of disease is not merely an epidemiological problem, but an institutional one as well. Social inequalities, the dominance of central-state led discourse, and the lack of participatory health education all contribute to a persistently high incidence of disease. This research calls for a re-politicization and contextualization of public health problems in order to better understand why they occur and therefore be better able to prevent them. Dissertation. The Challenge of Knowledge Sharing
In the Vietnamese science community, knowledge production and sharing are still limited. Based on intensive field work, this book investigates how organizations operating in the field of water research understand and practice knowledge management. The national science policy, culture, tradition, international collaboration, and local market forces all contribute to the current conditions of knowledge exchange in Vietnam. It is shown that the concentration of organizations in "knowledge clusters" could possibly increase the innovative capacity of research and development, which represents a key driving force in the country's ambitious plans of becoming a middle income country.
