The collection consists of the typescript, by H.H. Langton, of Sagard-Theodat's history of Canada from 1615-1630.
The National Library of Canada prepared an exhibition from its Rare Book Collection entitled "Passages: A Treasure Trove of North American Exploration." The library highlights an image of the rare book "Le Grand Voyage du pays des Hurons" and a biographical sketch of French missionary Gabriel Sagard (ca 1614-ca 1636), who visited America in the 1600s and wrote about the mores and customs of the Huron.
The early history of the French effort in Canada is illuminated by this narrative of the lay brother Gabriel Sagard's journey into Huron country. The narrator describes all that can be said about the country and its inhabitants. The perusal of it will be the pleasanter to all sorts of persons because the book is filled with many diverse matters, some admirable and remarkable as occurring among barbarians and savages, others beastly and inhuman....
