Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash (Second Edition)

New edition with bonus material by Dave McKean! Dark Horse proudly presents a new, second edition, of the graphic novel by legendary artist Dave McKean, based on the life of Paul Nash, a surrealist painter during World War 1. The Dreams of Paul Nash deals with real soldier's memoirs and all the stories add up to a moving piece about how war and extreme situations change us, how we deal with that pain, and, in Nash's case, how he responded by turning his landscapes into powerful and fantastical psychoscapes. The second edition of Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash features a new cover by Dave McKean, along with 15 pages of new bonus material examining the creation of the book.

McKean uses mixed media to take readers on a journey unlike any other: "The Coast Road" follows a desperate wife trying to find her missing husband, whose ghostly image appears in unexpected ways. "Black Holes," written by an anonymous journalist, concerns the politically sensitive true story of Chinese villagers induced by the government to sell their blood, only to be infected with AIDS through poor medical practice. Tales of sadness and humor, insightful travelogues, and diary entries fill the pages of McKean's latest masterful achievement. Winner of the Victoria and Albert Museum Illustrated Book of the Year award.

Bug-Jargal

Victor Hugo’s Bug-Jargal (1826) is one of the most important works of nineteenth-century colonial fiction, and quite possibly the most sustained novelistic treatment of the Haitian Revolution by a major European author. This Broadview edition makes Hugo’s novel available in a completely new English translation, the first in over one hundred years. Set in 1791, during the first months of a slave revolt that would eventually lead to the creation of the black republic of Haiti in 1804, Bug-Jargal is a stirring tale of interracial friendship and rivalry, a provocative account of the ties that bind a young Frenchman to one of the rebel leaders and the tragic misunderstandings that threaten to sever those ties completely. This Broadview edition contains a critical introduction and a broad selection of appendices, including Hugo’s never-before-translated 1820 short story “Bug-Jargal,” contemporary reviews of the novel, documents pertaining to the young Hugo’s poetics and politics, and selections from his source materials about the Haitian Revolution.

At last -- Dave McKean's landmark Cages as it was meant to be seen and read: a true novel in visual form. Eight years in the making. McKean is an artist with something important to say. In Cages, he has created a fully-realized microcosm, a world consisting of a street, a night club and an apartment house. With this, McKean has a means to comment on mythology, art, God, creation, sex, love and hate. For McKean, Cages is, "the closest I've come to describing my world." And Cages is a beautiful world.
