Polidoro da Caravaggio (c. 1500–1543), one of Raphael’s most influential and distinctive followers, has not been well treated by time. His significant early frescoes, which graced exterior palace facades in Rome, have perished almost without exception. A rare few are preserved but most are known only in copies. Consequently, the originality of Polidoro’s public work has been little explored, despite his once famous reputation and the association of his name with Raphael and Michelangelo. His move to Sicily later in life, a region with few surviving primary sources, further complicates the study of his work. Extant pieces by the artist from this period are unusually severe in content and technique, and their attribution has often been controversial. In this first account in English, Polidoro’s radical Sicilian paintings are considered through the lens of the religious life of the era and in relation to his early secular work. This much-needed investigation establishes Polidoro’s proper place in the canon of art history.
Con questo IV volume della serie espressione della Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici del nostro Ateneo, si è potuta ripristinare una continuità, sia pure ad ampia periodicità, che la redazione intende consolidare con una partecipazione dell’intera ‘comunità’ della Scuola (pure mantenendo centrale lo ‘spazio’ riservato agli allievi). I saggi qui presentati, appartenenti a tutti i curricula diacronici presenti nella Scuola (pre-protostorico, orientalistico, classico, medievista), fanno emergere alcune tendenze, fra le quali (in inspiegabile controtendenza, di questi tempi) la crescita d’interesse per l’archeologia islamica, la raggiunta piena trasversalità dell’archeologia pubblica o la conferma dell’articolazione delle tematiche che caratterizzano dalla fondazione il settore classico. Si conferma inoltre la varietà delle provenienze degli allievi, sia come formazione di base sia come matrice accademica, a conferma di una buona rispondenza della Scuola alle esigenze e alle attese attuali.

La trattazione ha un utile taglio pratico ed è integrata da: piante e tabelle riassuntive delle principali opere di ciascun periodo esaminato; 30 analisi di opere d’arte che ne illustrano le principali caratteristiche tecniche, stilistiche e storiche; numerosi itinerari che insegnano a preparare una visita guidata all'interno di una città o di una regione italiana; descrizione dei principali musei d’arte di ogni regione e delle loro collezioni. A queste si aggiungono una sezione dedicata alla terminologia artistica e una ai principali termini artistici in quattro lingue straniere.
