Acidophile Microbiology: From Extreme Environments to Biotechnological Applications
Acidophiles are microorganisms that thrive in acidic environments, and these microorganisms can be found in a wide range of habitats, including acid mine drainage, volcanic hot springs, and acidic soils. Despite the extreme conditions they live in, acidophiles have adapted unique biochemical pathways and mechanisms to survive and thrive in such harsh environments. This Research Topic aims to bring together recent advances in the field of acidophile microbiology, from fundamental research on microbial diversity, physiology, and ecology in extreme environments to biotechnological applications, including bioleaching and bioremediation.
Capital Account Policies in Chile Macro-financial considerations along the path to liberalization
This paper recounts Chile’s experience with capital account policies since the 1990s. We present how two external shocks were confronted under very different macroeconomic and capital account frameworks. We show that during the 1997-98 Asian-LTCM-Russia crisis, a closed capital account and relatively rigid exchange rate severely constrained the monetary policy response to the shock, aggravating the fall in domestic demand. During the 2008-09 crisis, a full-fledged inflation targeting framework allowed the authorities to implement a significant countercyclical response. We argue that domestic stability considerations lay behind the policy regime switch toward capital account liberalization from 1999 onwards.

Restoration of motor function following spinal cord injury is a complex and challenging task. By reviewing emerging cellular, pharmacological, rehabilitative, as well as surgical approaches, this book seeks to highlight promising therapeutic strategies for the repair and regeneration of motor circuitry. The multidisciplinary nature of these approaches illustrates various routes to bridging the gap between the bench and the bedside and to identify the challenges that must be overcome in order to bring about a viable therapeutic strategy for spinal cord injury patients.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the main pathologies causing significant loss of neurological function. Therefore, a variety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies are the aims of several studies. To provide the best care, it is important to know and understand the therapeutic approaches that have shown important progress in this topic. This book contains eight chapters that are divided into three sections: Introduction, Pharmacological Therapies, and Non-Pharmacological Therapies. The authors of the chapters deal with the pathophysiology of SCI, the effect of antioxidant and immunosuppressive agents, stem cell-based therapies, the use of cultured cells for transference or transplantation, and the application of non-invasive modalities (transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation, etc.) for SCI rehabilitation.
