The current U.S. Army doctrine for larger unit operations predates the AirLand Battle doctrine. As a result, the Combined Arms Center's Concept Development Directorate and the Command and General Staff College's Department of Joint and Combined Operations are updating the older doctrine with a new field manual on larger unit operations. The Combat Studies Institute (CSI) was tasked to support this project by preparing a historical perspective on the echelons of field army, army group, and theater army organization during wartime. This study is the result of CSI's efforts. The military philosopher J.F.C. Fuller noted that "looking back is the best way of looking forward." CSI's task in lookin...

The Path Resistance Method for Bounding the Smallest Nontrivial Eigenvalue of a Laplacian

Abstract: "We introduce the path resistance method for lower bounds on the smallest nontrivial eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of a graph. The method is based on viewing the graph in terms of electrical circuits; it uses clique embeddings to produce lower bounds on [lambda]2 and star embeddings to produce lower bounds on the smallest Rayleigh quotient when there is a zero Dirichlet boundary condition. The method assigns priorities to the paths in the embedding; we show that, for an unweighted tree T, using uniform priorities for a clique embedding produces a lower bound on [lambda]2 that is off by at most an O(log diameter (T)) factor. We show that the best bounds this method can produce for clique embeddings are the same as for a related method that uses clique embeddings and edge lengths to produce bounds."

Macroeconomics and Financial Crises

"After the Great Depression John Maynard Keynes led the way in building a new macroeconomic framework to deal with that unprecedented economic reality. Ten years after our own crisis, however, macroeconomics has not come to terms with how to grapple with the idea of financial crises in its models. In the stylized world of macroeconomic theory, crises are not an inherent or structural element. Gary Gorton and Guillermo Ordonez, who were prominent experts to first authoritatively respond to the financial crisis of 2008 have since been working to understand what needs to change in macroeconomic models to incorporate and address financial crises. In this book Gorton and Ordonez provide an author...
