Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop: Bioclimatic Ceramic Assemblies I
ACAW: Bioclimatic Ceramic Assemblies I chronicles the first of a series of workshops that explore the bioclimatic potential of terracotta in contemporary architecture. A collaboration between Boston Valley Terra Cotta, the preeminent terracotta manufacturer in the United States and the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), the workshop interrogates the structural and environmental performance of terracotta and how its form and assembly into architecture can address environmental factors like heat, cold, water, and illumination. Teams consisting of architects, façade engineers, ceramicists and artists collaboratively developed unique architectural proposals that imagined future uses of the material. These included heat exchangers as façade elements, a structured terracotta baguette pavilion, humidity mitigating walls and layered terracotta elements with different environmental qualities. The groups also discussed innovative tooling and aesthetic potentials for the material.

Under the auspices of the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW), a research collaborative supported by Boston Valley Terra Cotta, the largest manufacturer of architectural terra cotta in the United State, architectural firms work with manufacturing to explore material and design innovation. Now in its fifth year, the workshop aims to educate architects about terra cotta through the production of unique prototypes of rain screen facade systems, modular assemblies, columns, and structural systems. Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop V chronicles the work of architectural firms Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF), LMN Architects, Smith + Gill Architecture, Pelli Clarke Pelli, Perkins and Will, PLP Architecture, Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), Studio Gang, and academic teams Haptek Lab and Alfred University/University at Buffalo.

ACAW: Bioclimatic Ceramic Assemblies II chronicles the research and prototypes developed by six teams for the second Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop in 2018. A collaboration between Boston Valley Terra Cotta, the preeminent terracotta manufacturer in the United States and the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), the workshop's aim is to explore the bioclimatic potential of terracotta in contemporary architecture. Projects by AECOM/Alfred University, Morphosis, University at Buffalo/Alfred University, Sasaki/Studio NYL, SHoP Architects and Radical/Matter explore the structural and environmental potential of the material and the opportunities for new expression and building performance this can bring to architecture. The teams are composed of practicing architects, engineers, ceramic artists and academics. Team AECOM/Alfred University developed.

Studies on Respiratory Disorders
This volume covers data describing the role of free radicals and antioxidants in respiratory disorders, including the data that deal with clinical and pre-clinical trials. Chapters describe the relationship of oxidative stress to a number of respiratory and pulmonary conditions from a basic science and clinical perspective, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, acute lung injury, pulmonary hypertension, toxicity and fibrosis, cancer and asbestosis. Florence Nightingale: The Crimean War
Florence Nightingale is famous as the “lady with the lamp” in the Crimean War, 1854—56. There is a massive amount of literature on this work, but, as editor Lynn McDonald shows, it is often erroneous, and films and press reporting on it have been even less accurate. The Crimean War reports on Nightingale’s correspondence from the war hospitals and on the staggering amount of work she did post-war to ensure that the appalling death rate from disease (higher than that from bullets) did not recur. This volume contains much on Nightingale’s efforts to achieve real reforms. Her well-known, and relatively “sanitized”, evidence to the royal commission on the war is compared with her confidential, much franker, and very thorough Notes on the Health of the British Army, where the full horrors of disease and neglect are laid out, with the names of those responsible.
Young Architects: Scale
Every spring for the last 18 years, the Architectural League of New York has invited young architects from around the world to submit their portfolios to be selected as the best of a new generation of talent. The Young Architects program has identified many of the best-known names in architecture today, including Steven Holl, Neil Denari, Billie Tsien, and Carlos Jimenez. This year's honorees are six young practices whose projects range in scale from an intimate theater to a floating football stadium.. The firms are: Douglas Pancoast, Vrinda Khanna and Robert Schultz, Sunil Bald and Yolande Daniels, Edward Mitchell, Omar Khan and Laura Gar falo, and Shih-Fu Peng and R is n Heneghan. This colorful title, the first to come out of the Young Architects program, includes photographs of built work, computer renderings, drawings, diagrams, and text, all in an inspiring mix of fresh ideas and creative vision. An introductory essay by Nina Rappaport provides an overview of current state of architectural practice. Future volumes of Young Architects will appear annually; these titles will serve as a guide to tomorrow's architectural luminaries.
