A rather extensive study of more than 240 herbarium collections from the Amanita caesarea-complex from Mexico, the Eastern U.S.A., Canada, Europe, Africa, and Asia provided the basis of the present work. Amanita caesarea and A. hemibapha, both sensu auct., are misidentifications of several species. Amanita caesarea s. qtr. is unknown in the U.S.A. and Canada, but it grows in Mexico, although it is a rare fungus. Amanita hemibapha s. qtr. is unknown in America. An exploration of mind and body from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Natural Mind and Spontaneous Happiness. From the great popularizer of alternative medicine, here is a collection of essays about his travels to South America in the early 1970s in search of information on altered states of consciousness, drug use in other cultures, and other matters having to do with the complementarity of mind and body. Andrew Weil’s experiences during this time laid the foundation for his mission to restore the connection between medicine and nature. In The Marriage of the Sun and Moon, now updated with a new preface by the author, the esteemed Dr. Weil attempts to empower patients to take full charge of their destinies.

History of Toxicology and Environmental Health

This volume, Toxicology in Antiquity II, continues to tell the story of the roots of toxicology in ancient times. Readers learn that before scientific research methods were developed, toxicology thrived as a very practical discipline. Toxicologists are particularly proud of the rich and storied history of their field and there are few resources available that cover the discipline from a historical perspective. People living in ancient civilizations readily learned to distinguish safe from hazardous substances, how to avoid these hazardous substances and how to use them to inflict harm on enemies. Volume II explores the use of poison as weapons in war and assassinations, early instances of air pollution, the use of hallucinogens and entheogens, and the role of the snake in ancient toxicology. - Provides the historical background for understanding modern toxicology - Illustrates the ways ancient civilizations learned to distinguish safe from hazardous substances, how to avoid the hazardous substances and how to use them against enemies - Details scholars who compiled compendia of toxic agents
